http://www.polygon.com/2014/3/18/5524058/playstation-vr-ps4-virtual-reality Even if this is used as "just" a display with 3D audio, it could be pretty cool, depending on the price. They take a dig at oculus rift (I guess) by talking about how it's just plug & play, with no drivers or anything needed. Of course, it all comes down to the software & how comfortable this thing is.
Thats bad news for oculus, their system is still dev-spec with "some assembly required", they have showed some nice things like crystal cove but are yet to unveil a consumer version Still the key is code, anyone can put together a HMD but so far only oculus (with carmack btw) has the code to keep latency to a minimum. I tried the rift a couple times and tech like psmove is laggy as shit compared to it. But if history is any indication ease of use >>>>>> quality, so that huge number of gamers that cant even put together a simple gaming PC are gonna buy this instead of the oculus
True that. Sony have been doing HMDs in Japan for a while haven't they? Guess they could finally have got it right.
"The headset, codenamed Project Morpheus (after the god of dreams, not the Matrix character as Sony clarified)"
I'm glad it's 1080p like the latest Occulus build as well, hopefully we can get details on latency and persistence, and I'm also really hopeful that PS4 games don't have to take a massive hit in graphical fidelity to work with this
It better be, the Rift 2 is like $350 IIRC, and thats a devkit the consumer version could/should be even less
Only reason why I say that is, every other VR we've heard about or released has been expensive. Other thing is many can't use them.
I think a VR unit would be best if it were at least 1440p. 1080p seems too low for an image that supposedly fills up your entire field of vision. I doubt the PS4 could handle 1440p, though.
I am a big fan and longtime collector of immersive reality stuff. Any platform is good, pc, ps4. It's good to see it being worked on again, as it really died off hard after the 1st gen of gear as the cpu power was really lacking.
Very interesting. I liked it when these things were in the arcade years ago. Might make me pick up a PS4 in the future as I don't play games on my PC. wasn't there supposed to be one of these for the Jag years ago?
