Great news! New neighbours and they are fat as beef cattle. Sounds like a herd marching around upstairs.
I'm downstairs of course and they are above. Didn't have an issue for fours years... then they moved in.
I've got plenty of ceiling thankfully, so I believe adding an airspace between the floor above and new ceiling should help...

But has anyone had to do any sound proofing or know of anyone who has had soundproofing done to their apartment?

Edit: Alternatively, what's the best way to attach speakers to the ceiling for maximum transmission of sound?

Can't help ya with the sound proofing question, but I did live in an apartment for 4 years and noise was a big concern because I'm a fairly light sleeper. If you need to get some sleep and are on a tight budget white noise with fans or speakers works fairly well.

Had a band live under us. Went and talked to them several times. Eventually they told me I couldn't expect them to be quiet and they KNEW the law. Four sound complaints later they are begging us to not call in sound complaints any more because they need to practice.... at 3 AM. Can't say I miss that place at all.

Calling in sound complaints can have a lot of negative consequences though use with caution.

If sleeping peacefully is your main concern, try earplugs? Some people can sleep with them no problem, some people cannot stand them. I can wear them while sleeping and its a great help sometimes.

Try that, you need something to absorb sounds and vibrations:

Otherwise, you can try to talk to them about the noise, ask for a lighter walk, adding more carpets or soundproofing their flooring.

My better half had a different kind of problem, neighbour upstairs, bless him, has a disease that makes him fart all the time and I mean a lot!!! First time I spent the night at hers, I said "your neighbours are moving their furniture around a lot", she said "nope that's no furniture moving, he's farting". Imagine the look on my face x) and it's like 30-40 times a day, a concert, though one day I got told off for cheering one of his performances quite loudly.

I see ur in Sydney....why not just move to Melb & buy a (relatively) more affordable house with what ur paying for apartments in Sydney..:)

I once had a friend who had a fat couple above his apartment who often had sex in the middle of the night & drove him nuts! He started playing porn really loudly to get even but instead got told off by his next door neighbours! lol

Our neighbours are a bunch of nut jobs. Long story short they invite people over to create noise, simply to piss us off. They stuffed up one night and invited the wife's work mate over. Ended up being one of my mates and his wife (the work mate) the neighbour said to them "our neighbours hate us because we make noise playing pool and air hockey till late, lets go out and play pool!" My mate responded with "i know them and i reckon you would know they have a young fella?" Told them they should be more considerate. They have since toned it down a bit & i mean a bit. Looking forward to getting out, unfortunately not till next year.

Mate said (also told wife) he will never go over there again as the guy (my neighbour) is an aragont nob.

Best part is i have this conversation as a facebook discussion. Have taken screen dumps of conversation & considering doing a letter box drop of the street before we go.

The people diagonally behind us sold up and moved out, asked them why? Response was bigger house, house without issues (our houses are shit) & (quote) "the fuckin noise". So not only affecting us but others as well.

Also the people on the other side they put up a rope fence along tge drive way from the garage door down to the road (fuck the postie too) because the neighbours on the other side were using their driveway. Oh did you discuss the issue, they seem reasonable? Answer was "nope". Oh btw in Australia, from the letter box to the gutter is council propert so what he has done is illegal.

could try dynamat stuff that's used in soundproofing cars, or they stuff they use in audio studios maybe check some audiophile or car audio enthusiast hobbyist sites.

failing that, speakers are best attached to the ceilling, and shared solid walls,

Believe me, we had a pack of rowdy lesbians in the next block - ear plugs do not work! I've tried them in the current situation but the footsteps seem to travel right through them.
Yep, I'll probably get someone in to give me a rundown of options. Vibrations are bastards to deal with.
I've already (tried to) approach him - he doesn't answer the door. Letter drops are all I've been able to do.
But (Ha!) that err third one makes me happy I am not in that situation!

Oh god no! Fat sex? Please never mention that on any threads I am in ever! :p
I am on the way out outskirts (probably why the people are so inconsiderate...) of Sydney.
It's as cheap as it is going to get with relative access to the cache of jobs in Sydney sadly.

BIG BADDA BOOM also hahahahahaha, already done ;)

You sure we aren't in the same area with the same morons? I wonder sometimes where the hell these people get off. I'd move but then... well I'd have to move. I'd rather fight the idiots than let them win. About 60% of us at this group of apartments have the common decency to shut up. Apartments really make them sound ritzy doesn't it? Let's face it. They are units. Big ugly block of units! :p

Thankfully the owner of the unit above me said she will redo flooring (who pays, I do not really care - as long as the fat strolls at 2am stop!)
I'll keep bringing it to her attention though, if I'm lucky he will move out sooner rather than later...

I've actually just been looking into something like this, I'm running out of space on my bedside table! :p

Well what do you know, we've got both! Should I just play his recorded loud footsteps back at him at 1.5 - 2 hour intervals?
Maybe those footsteps can be my white noise machine! Genius!

Ask them if their apartment is carpeted. It makes a difference. My friend once offered to pay for carpeting for her upstairs neighbours for that reason - they had a small child running around.

You can't really soundproof an apartment. Soundproof = no oxygen. Sure, you can reduce sound, but blocking sound from another room out rather than soundproofing the room isn't an ideal solution.

Five years I heard nothing from upstairs. Now I hear nothing but everything. I've spoken with the owner, no carpet has been removed.
I think soundproofing the apartment above would be fine. I'd be more than happy to pay for create a vacuum upstairs void of air ;)
The guy is just fat and inconsiderate, the previous tenant wasn't. People are assholes.

Step 1: Live upstairs
Step 2: Don't live downstairs

I live upstairs and rarely hear anything through the wall or floor though those below me have complained before...when I was barely at home the entire day/night that day. No idea what that was about. My main problems are that the windows are single paned and poorly sealed and the air conditioner is a window united mounted to the wall which lets in a ton of noise. Neighbors across the way have loud music? It gets in through the AC and windows. Those below me can play their music fairly loud and I won't hear it through the floor unless I press my ear to it.

Man, I feel your pain, I have a fat heavy footed agoraphobic and anthropophobic nutter who also has tourette's living above me!

At first it was pretty funny but when you hear him night and day its really annoying, he flooded me once and because he doesn't answer his door to anyone I had to get the police to break his door down, I'm in the process of trying to get him evicted, knowing my luck I'll end up with something much worse

I got lucky I bought a cheap seperated rancher thats close enough to the city but still in the middle of no where. I take my speakers to eleven. But thier was a time I had a fat room mate that smoked like a chimney. After he moved out I had a yellow tar room ruined floor. A hole I my bathroom because he fell through. I'd say about $1 grand in repairs. No more roomies for me lol.

I don't know this first hand (I live in Chico where it's mostly college students renting apartments) but a friend of mine in my hometown lives above a guy who plays his stereo at all hours. I'll be in her apartment and you can feel the sub thumping her ceiling and suddenly it'll die for 10-15 minutes only to come back on again. The dude seems to be passing out at random and then waking back up to find his music off or something. She has told me it is the radio playing of all things and not even random on a massive set of MP3s.

She's also said he tends to have people randomly coming and going at night which makes me suspect he might be a drug dealer of sorts but neither of us have any real proof of this. He doesn't answer his door much and when he does he isn't exactly agreeable about the noise problem. Personally I'm afraid to rock the boat with my neighbors by directly asking anything of them as I have to live here until August (when my lease is up) and I'd rather not have to deal with them deciding to destroy any of my plants outside or be a generalized passive-agressive asshole. OTOH if one of them knocked on my door and nicely asked if I could turn my music down I'd be happy to, perhaps I'm just being fearful without cause.

Floods... that was the previous tenant. Oh that's fine, flood my house on a Friday night after I get home from work after a week of hell. At least he was quiet...

Yuck, that doesn't sound very tasty at all. How's that dog with broccoli say it? Do not want! :p

What's worse is that there's only one of them, the unit that mirrors mine has three or four people. I'll have to arrange some people to drop by to see what could be done. Even to dampen the noise would greatly help. Ah well, back to extremely loud Blur and EarthBound ;)
