Source code for PSX, what to do with it?

Discussion in 'Sony Programming and Development' started by Benedict_Arnold, Jun 18, 2005.

  1. I have a question: If I have source code for a PSX game, how could I try it out? I am thinking I would need a dev kit to compile/run it? Would there be any way to put it on a CD and try it on a debug station?

This is a hypothetical question. I do not have any source code for a PSX game.

  2. ...Hypothetically 'yes'.

Yeah, you're right, you would need to compile it first.

  4. Hypothetically speaking, if I got such a source code and I didn't have a functioning dev kit, who here could compile it and put it on a CD? But then they couldn't distribute the CD or pass it out (in fact, you would have to hypothetically send the CD to me and destroy the code)? I would in theory pay for the services.

  5. Ah, so you want to hire Dev Services, with NDA, why didn't you say that to start with, lol

...Do you legally own the source?

  6. I don't have any source code. (right now <fingers crossed>)

Does a defunct company still own the source? The source was never officially announced or released. (in theory of course)

That's why it's imperative that I get a working dev kit where I can compile myself or find someone I trust to do it.

Well PS1 dev stuff is reasonably cheap due to the fact thats its pretty common (in dev item terms) - It may well be easier just to source whatever is necessary, and use that yourself.

  8. I have a dev kit, but I can't get it working for the life of me. I was trying it on Win 98. I just (ugh) ordered Win 95 to see if that makes a difference. ISA sucks. I guess Plug-And-Play and Win XP really spoiled me. I also have 7 discs of dev crap on CDs and who knows what they do (except I learned that the Performance Analyzer is only for the DTL-H2700 which I don't have)

I also need to build some sort of cable going from the cards to a TV/monitor.

Talk around here - Theres certain to be someone who can help you set it up and compile it. Unfortunately though, Thats not me!

  10. I won't waste anyone's time compiling until I actually get the source code. (fingers crossed)
However, it would be nice if there was a newbie faq on how to install a dev kit. The PDFs Sony includes leave a lot to be desired.

You could try to compile it using homebrew PS1 / PS2 libraries. I'm not familiar with PS1 / PS2 programming, but i think it's possible.

but even if you have "Hypothetically" the source code would you need also the assets like level maps, models, sounds, textures and graphics to get it run ?

i mean if you run just the compiled game from you sourcecode wouldnt it need those and if they are not there just shut down or do i miss something here ?

i have some old game source code from old hdd ., but not all can compile, coz some internal library i have not :( (sorry i can not say what game source code i have), just want ask have source can not 100% can compile to game

  16. Well that's not good. So if there's internal libraries then I won't be able to compile. Hmm, I wonder if some people from this defunct developer have any internal libraries then.

It sounds pretty obvious that you will need the help of the original writer to compile, it can be extremely hard even for a very experienced developer to compile other people's work.

It may be that the libraries you require are there, but you have not set up your development environment correctly. You would need to set up the correct paths to include and lib dirs.

It may also be that it's trying to link against the Sony libs but you haven't installed them, or you have installed the wrong version.

In order to help any further, we would have to know at what stage the compile is breaking and what the errors are.

  19. Ok, my head is going to explode after all that. I'll let you know if I get the source.

Let me know, too. Fat chance it just uses the Psy-Q compiler and libs.
