Indeed, it could not. If you've seen the game in action, you would understand. Just way too much stuff going on. As one of the staffers at IGN described it, it's like "Naomi on Sterroids". It doesn't look like it's some huge jump in technology... just good at what it does. Added lighting effects are one advantage over Naomi... not sure about the rest. System16 would surely be a good place to look.
When I saw Planet Harriers I never thought it looked anything special. I'm sure a Dreamcast could do it with a few alterations here and there. It's not that impressive really. Still looks like a Naomi game over all with a few bells & whistles. Yakumo
I would be thoroughly impressed if anyone got it running at full speed on a DC. It's not that it's extremely detailed, but before, it's very "deep" in terms of field of view, and of course, the action is pretty fast. I can't think of anything of that level on the DC.
actually i was curious, not to go ot, but was the game orignally made published by sega, or did sega just publish it in japan for infograms, cause i know the U.S. version is called just xtreme sports and is published by infrograms.
Boy, I went and played the original Space Harrier (I love it, not as much as Galaxy Force II, but still love it.) on MAME for about two hours, before going to sleep, last night - and I still woke up a bit ... not exactly dizzy, but disoriented, yes. .... SO cool! Now... that takes care of my craving. But I'd still love to play Planet Harriers at home one day.
What home version, if any, do you use to play Galaxy Force 2? Ive got the Megadrive, good but not near arcade, I need a great version......I hear Marty is good, out of the question...maybe Saturn??
I saw the saturn version on Yakumo's Retro Core and I think it looks good, but I play the Mame version with an arcade-ish stick on my PC.
sadly there is no home version of Galaxy Force II that is an exact reproduction of the arcade. the Saturn version tries to be, because it has the same graphics, but they do not move at the same rate as the arcade. System Y "Galaxy Force Hardware" powered arcade Galaxy Force II: 60fps, with no slowdown Saturn Galaxy Force II: 30 FPS with slowdown, on top of only having half the framerate. makes a huge difference. the sad thing is, Saturn's hardware ( 2 SH2 CPUs plus VDP1 and VDP2 ) is vastly more powerful than the System Y board that arcade Galaxy Force 2 uses. that tells me whoever programmed the Saturn version, botched it. from what I recall, it wasn't Sega, but an outside developer that Sega farmed out 'Sega Ages: Galaxy Force II' to program. I don't have any proof of that though. the FM Towns Marty, years before the Saturn version, got a decent conversion that although is no where near even the flawed Saturn port, is much better than the Megadrive-Genesis Galaxy Force II. I just tried playing the arcade through MAME. it runs about as slowly on my machine as the Saturn version. the only way that I know of to play it at 60 frames per second, other than having the real arcade unit, is through the emulator FINAL BURN. I've used Final Burn since 2000 to play Galaxy Force II and After Burner II, and over more recent years as support has been added, Thunder Blade. the version of FB here: http://www.finalburn.com/ should run GFII nicely even on a slow PC. back in 2000 all I had was a Pentium III 450 MHz, 256 MB with 32 MB TNT2 Ultra graphics
AFAIK... spending all of 30 seconds on the arcade version, the FM-Towns version features very competitive graphics, but about... oh... half the frame rate of the arcade, making it shit. Same w/ Afterburner on the same system, FYI.
Yes, this game does have very far drawer distances but have you ever noticed how the polygon shapes change as they get closer to you? It's as if more polygons are added to the shapes. The game was developed by Interloop not sega or Infrogames. Yakumo
thats right my mistake, i was just confused on publishing, but i wonder with the quality of the game why sega bothered publising it in japan when it is not even their own.
good question. I only saw this Japanese version around for a short time. Glad I picked it up though. Could be one of the more rare titles in the future. In a way I kind of liked it a bit but I guess it is pretty turd over all. Yakumo
I used to use Final Burn for Galaxy Force II too.............really good emulation, tho the actual emu was a bit limited, my digital pad too not too hot. Shame that emu was discontinued afik/contorted into the modern CPS2 etc one. Same for Modeler emu......ran a perfect game of Outrunners.
