I swear I read something a few years back that claimed you could splice a dreamcast controller to a usb2.0 plug and use it on your pc(with some homebrewed drivers).

Ever hear of this, or am I just losing it?

maybe you are thinking about the xbox controller. All you have to do with that is join the coloured wires.

  3. Yeah, the XBox controller ports are just USB with an added wire (I think to give power to the rumble motor), so that's possible. Dreamcast controllers have 5 pins in their connector, so you could splice that straight to a USB plug, but that doesn't mean anything without a USB controller chip.

The extra cable in the xbox controller is the video sync for the light guns. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that you can't connect a dreamcast controller to a pc without a usb controller chip.

I figured so, thanks for the help.

I asked because I've started playing around with mame again and the only controller I've got is a beat up axis pad(which just happens to be one of the worst controllers I've ever used).

Was going to buy a 360 controller(since no one around here has any decent pc only controllers), but the price kinda made me think twice. Can't believe they want 40 bucks for a stinking wired controller, though maybe that is the standard price for controllers so soon after release.(last "new" controller I bought was a dc one on 9-9-99 and it was only 20 dollars or so if I remember correctly).

Those new Xbox 360 controllers do feel nice though. At least, it did when I was stoned (only time I've played a 360 was last Friday). Maybe I need to go take a second look, but they seemed like they were worth it when I used one.

That's how much the large "Duke" Xbox controllers retailed for at launch in 2001. They dropped to $29.99 about a year or so later.

I now what you mean about the feel of the controller, especially when you compare it to the original xbox's hunk of plastic. I couldn't stand using the original controller for more then a few minutes, but after playing cod2 on a demo unit I fell in love with the new design. Not only can I reach all of the buttons without strain, everything from the analog to the cord just seems like it's built solid.
