    Hi!

I just found me second automobile edition in the wild
This made me think ... If I can spot several of them, maybe I oversight some of them too ...

... quite easy to identify a yellow or red ps2 as a special edition.... ... Well, compared to most of the other colors the ps2s come in -, most of them are either black, light blue or silver - those colors are easy to spot.

Well ... but there is a silver ps2 automobile edition.

How to spot it? Is the silver any different to the standard silver release, whats the exact difference? Can you spot it with the eye? How does it compare to the ordinary silver ps2? is it a different shade?

Got any hints what signs to look out for?

    Kind regards,
    ninn

The automobile colour PS2s were solely within the SCPH-3000x R series of PS2s. Satin Silver only became a standard, widely available colour with the SCPH-5000x series. So the model numbers on the back will be different of course.

To visually differentiate them, look for a firewire port to the side of the USB port. If there is, you are in luck. If it's not there, it's just a standard Satin Silver SCPH-5000x PS2. There will also be a visible infrared port between the reset/eject buttons if it is an SCPH-5000x (standard Satin Silver).

Arent there also scph-3900X SS ps2's? Those would have i.link (4-pin firewire) and no IR too. I might be wrong but Im pretty sure this exists, from what I remember this was the limited edition satin silver and then the scph-5000X SS became standard... Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

An auto edition silver ps2 would be painted, supposedly with car paint. It should be glossy.

Elijah, this was great hint!
I will look for the firewall-port ... this feature is easy to spot! Thanks a lot!

Cyberghost, those ps2s are definitely not car paint. I know it is rumored - and i read it all the time - that they used car paint for them, but they are just colored (not painted) plastic.

    Thanks for your hints,
    ninn

Isn't the ps2 case fiberglass? I remember it being not a typical shell.

The SCPH-39000 silver was simply a limited edition in Japan (not mass produced like the SCPH-5000x silver was in the end); it was never released outside Japan. Outside Japan, it was the automobile silver colour edition (SCPH-3000x R) first, then the SCPH-5000x silver about two years later. So Japan got three runs of coloured PS2s; the silver SCPH-37000 (more on that product code below...), then another lmited run of silver SCPH-3900x, and then the mass-produced silver SCPH-5000x, and outside there were only two; the first limited SCPH-3000x R 666 colour silver edition, and then the mass-produced SCPH-5000x silver.

So the firewire/infrared port differentiation "method" will be 100% reliable in the West.

By the way, the SCPH-5000x silver was intitally going to be a limited edition too, but then due to the popularity, it became a standard colour.

I forgot to state that they were only using the product code SCPH-3000x R for the automobile colour editions outside of Japan though. Within Japan, they were the SCPH-37000 series (identical to the SCPH-3000x R other than the product code). This series was created for all of the Japanese limited editions before the SCPH-3900x limited editions were released; a standard Japanese console of this time was SCPH-30000 (no R, unlike the overseas consoles).
