Hey, I would like to learn how to sprite rip.. I have always wanted to make some stuff out of lunar sprites, and how, exactly, do you take pictures like this one? Does it have to be emulated for you to do so? Thats the only way I thought it could be done, but I could be wrong. Are there any experts on this type of thing out there? Thanks Edit: BTW, I have Lunar sssc, already, so emulation will really be for "backup/ripping sprites", not stealing. :smt023
I would imagine for 32bit consoles the best way would be simply through emulator screenshots. For 8/16bit consoles, the cleanest way is to get yourself a Tile Laying app, like Tile Layer Pro or YY-CHR except you'll have to set yourself up a correct palette which might be difficult.
This game is for the playstation 1, though. I also hear that ISOs are hard to come by. What playstation emulator would be the best for this type of thing?
ePSXe is the best emulator around right now, but you'll need to get separate GPU/SPU/etc. plugins - they're all available at www.zophar.net and I'll guide you to the right plugins if needed (PM me). Good thing about this emulator too is that you can play proper commercial copies of games on it, so just stick the CD in your PC! Only problem I can see though is being an RPG, is whatever sprite(s) you're looking for available early on in the game? Because I feer having to play all the way through it just to get to whatever point you see some specific sprite, unless you have some way of copying memory card saves or someone else already has similar saves on the web somewhere. Are there any tile editors that can do PSX sprites? I wouldn't know what file or where to look for them, though. And as Kyuusaku said getting the correct palette will be a problem doing it that way, if it is possible.
I've not heard of a sprite extraction utility for PSX. I have heard of one for SNES and Genesis, but I'll be damned if I can find any mention of it on the net. If you are going to do it from ePSXe, you'll need to change your display type so that it doesn't filter the sprites OpenGL-style. Then use a screengrab utility and be prepared for some long nights.
Many companies went away from using the TIM format later in the ps1 life cycle because of all the tools for finding them instead focusing on their own format. Are there are emulators that will let you see VRAM during gameplay? Regardless of the format the original graphics are in on the disc, they should be visible in vram. Since loading of graphics to vram from disc wasn't very fast, most of the frames of the sprite animation should be loaded in at the same time. you might have better luck just grabbing the sprites from the GBA version of Lunar.
Ehh. I wanna get the Playstation sprites, no matter what. The Lunar Legend ones are small and deformed....well...including the enemies as well! :smt043 I just want some of the enemy sprites, and im gonna find em. I can also skip ahead by downloaded game saves (I hope).
I think Caetla (when run with a PAR and PC-link card) allows you to dump VRAM, but I suppose you don't have the equipment.
