Apparently Square Enix are going through a re-branding effort and are dropping the Enix in the name to simply just Square. What does everyone think? Definitely end of an era in gaming Original story here http://www.dualpixels.com/profiles/blogs/square-enix-to-drop-enix-in-a-re-branding-effort
I don't think too many people in the west, Europe especially, will take much if any notice. The names Square or Square Soft probably don't ring that many bells to begin with so dropping the name Enix probably won't register on many gamers' radar. In Japan obviously people will mourn the loss and maybe some in the States but you're right, it's another name developer that's effectively gone to the wall and been dissolved. It's the same with the Namco-Bandai rebrand from a few years ago. Anyone owning a PlayStation will have been aware of the Namco name because of all the Tekken, Ridge Racer, Museum etc titles, but Bandai? Most wouldn't have a clue, and baring in mind that globally from a financial standpoint Bandai are probably the bigger of the two halves, how long until the Namco part of the moniker is dropped? And while we're at it, who's going to be the one who buys up Konami? They've not had a sizeable hit for years, so surely if they're not already it can only be a matter of time before the sharks start circling.
MGS4? I don't think many people in the West will notice the Enix name disappearing...after all, their biggest series Dragon Quest was never as big of a hit here, and many of the games only left Japan after the merger.
One game or franchise doesn't keep a company afloat, however big the name is. Enix itself is a prime example of that.
Losing the Enix name is indeed sad. They released quite a few good games other than Dragon Quest as well and even two Saturn Exclusive titles! As for Namco-Bandai, well, Bandai make crap and if there is a good game under their name it's a 3rd party developed game. Namco really got the raw deal as far as quality titles assigned to company names go. Yakumo
Why don't they just do this... Square Soft rebrands itself as Square Enix rebrands itself as Circle Taito rebrands itself as Triangle Then they can use this simple logo:
Personally they should drop the Square part of the name, and come to that the Enix part and call themselves Taito or Domark...
I miss the days when a Square game was not likely to be an utter bunch of shit, but instead, generally an awesome work of art like Front Mission 3 or Einhänder or FF6. Losing Enix too... now this would be the symbolic end of some of the few reminders of one of the best times to be a gamer.
Square and EA used to have a Distrobution agreement in the states though that's probably what the joke is
I typed it so early I can't even remember where the joke was. I do remember that it seemed really humorous at the time... but that was like 4:30am in Japan...
