I wanted to a get a larger tv that is around 45-65 inch, somewhere between there. I will be using it for my video games, stuff I get from torrent, and dvd movies. I dont care much about HDTV but I did read something about HDTV becoming a standard and you must have it sometime in the future, I dont remember exactly what the article said. The square TVs seem to be 50% cheaper than the ones that are widescreen and HDTV . For example this square tv is "52" Big Screen TV for Sale - $399" http://baltimore.craigslist.org/ele/140397215.html And this widescreen one is "Hitachi 53" HDTV Widescreen TV - $900" http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/ele/141563780.html On craiglist its abou 4-600 for square tvs that are 50 inch at least, for hdtv widescreen ones they are 600-1000 So why do people get the widescreen tvs? Is it so they can watch the widescreen dvds and not have those black bars on the top and bottom? If I play my videogames on a widescreen tv will I have black bars on the left and right? I am confused about what reason there is to get a widescreen. I need to know if its worth it to get a widescreen, since its like double the cost. I dont care about super quality, and I do hate those black bars. As far as HDMI and HDTV and DVI stuff I dont care about that either. So which tv should I get, square or wide?
Why spend so much money on a huge TV if you don't care about quality? That said, easy answer, go for widescreen.
Give me widescreen, or give me death! ...er... that being said, i just have a little 27 inch square TV.... but my next tv, well in that case... Give me widescreen or give me death!
Widescreen. The reason 4:3 TV's are cheap is that people are buying widescreens, as thats the way the world is moving...
the people are moving that way so that means I should? What will happen is most people have widescreens and I have a 4:3?
Well not just people, content producers too. New consoles are designed with widescreen TV's in mind, as are newer films and TV programs...just doesn't make sense to buy 4:3 now.
Go to some place like Best Buy that sells 16:9 and 4:3 TVs, and compare widescreen and non-widescreen for yourself. If you own a widescreen TV you'l be better prepaired for new and up-and-comming games, movies, etc., but you'r going to be running all your stuff that doesn't support widescreen with boarders on the sides, or stretched to fit the screen. 4:3 on the other hand will run widescreen in letterbox with boarders on the top and bottom (or again, stretched). Pick your poison. 4:3 = boarders on top and bottom, 16:9 = boarders on left and right.
Honestly, I think now is the time to buy your last non HD/Widescreen TV. I don't think HD is cheap enough yet...and not everybody broadcasts in HD. I'd say buy your 4:3 TV now...and in a couple years trade up to a fancy one for a reasonable price.
I agree with Blur2040. I bought a 4:3 last fall because I know HDTV is not here yet, and widescreen is still expensive. Games won't be exclusively in HD for a while either. Though the best case is to have both so you can play your old games and new games like they're supposed to be played.
So on widescreen TV's and comp moniters does non widescreen stuff look awful with the bars? Say I hooked up a genesis to a HD widescreen?
I've been running older games on a widescreen TV over the last few months now, and I barely notice it after the first minute of play. You may be different. I suppose you might want to do the maths and see if you could get a 4:3 TV with a width equal to a widescreen TV for same price/cheaper, then you'd be getting a deal. The inch ratings can be confusing, since they're diagonal corner to corner - ie, a 53" widescreen will be significantly smaller in height but a lot wider than a 53" 4:3 TV. Things are certainly moving toward widescreen though - every Xbox 360 game has support by default, pretty much all movies are widescreen native. You probably want to go to a TV store and see what works, then look for something similar secondhand.
You think its worth it to get this? http://baltimore.craigslist.org/ele/139330378.html 46 inch High Definition TV - $500 Reply to: sale-139330378@craigslist.org Date: 2006-03-05, 10:42PM EST This is a 46 inch Toshiba rear projection TV. I bought it 4 years ago for over $1,200. It works excellently. It has a widescreen and 16:9 format. It takes component inputs and DVI.
