Well I've just got my shiny new saturn this morning, But I have a little problem

When I try to use the same RGB able as I use on my PAL saturn, I get a picture for a second, then it disappears. I can use an AV cable with no problems, But I'd rather have some RGB loveliness

    Anyone have any ideas?

I don't think the PAL cables will work because they're wired differently. I remember trying a SNES one on my SFC resulting in a b/w picture.

I use my PAL RGB cable without problems on my japanese Saturn. Don't think that they are wired differently.

your rgb cable has 3 caps wired to the r, g and b lines.
take them out and wire the 3 lines directly to their corresponding pins in the scart connector.
wont take you more than 5 minutes.

Will that affect the picture quality at all? Is it worth getting 2 cables, one with caps for PAL and one without for JP?

Japanese 21-pin RGB cable is not SCART. As d4s has pointed out, you need to do some rewiring. They look the same, but the pinout is different.

Its not a japanese 21 pin cable - the cable i am using is a PAL scart cable that came with my PAL saturn - Its just it doesn't work perfectly in my JP saturn. The picture comes up momentarily, but then decides to bugger off. The reason I'm curious as to whether removing caps is the problem is because I added caps to another cable (different console) to make it look better - so it seems odd that I would have to remove caps to make this one work, particularly when it works perfectly on my PAL saturn

The JP saturn is a model 2 (round buttons), whereas the PAL one is a model one - could this have anything to do with it?

Another quick question, is can I use the same memory cart on both saturns, or will I get problems like if using a gamecube memory card on US/PAL and JP games?

Yeah - I guess you're right. PAL Cable + PAL TV should equl happiness, but what do I know. How's Video/S-Video out of the port look? Don't suppose you have another cable to test with as well?

i have a jap saturn and a rgb cable but no problems....

    some random toughts

#1 you can have a scart cable for saturn that is NOT rgb
#2 you tv can't handle NTSC RGB video
#3 the scart in wich you connected the saturn is not rgb... if it is so change scart if you have more then one behind your TV....
    #4 faulty cable?

hope this helps at least a bit

    1) It works on the PAL saturn in RGB mode
    2) this is a possibility, although it handles PAL-60 through the GC, dreamcast and Mega Drive without a problem
    3) Only one socket, and it works in RGB on other consoles and the PAL saturn
    4) see 1
heh, thanks for the suggestions though

I use a scart cable to display PAL 60 on my flat's TV for my Dreamcast, but NTSC from the PS2 using a scart comes up black and white. I would suggest your TV can handle 60Hz, but not true NTSC. What is the TV's make and model? A Google search or checking the manual for the specs might be an idea.

Check the Saturn's +5v pin, apparently some SCART TVs need the blanking signal to switch to RGB mode. I don't recall a Japanese Saturn RF modulator so perhaps the "+5v" pin is disconnected.
