Anyone else play the English fan translation of Star Cruiser on Mega Drive? It's been so nice to finally understand what's going on in the game. Been enjoying it using my Mega everdrive. I have a feeling if Namco would have released this back then instead of canceling it, it would've been considered a Genesis/Mega Drive classic in the west. Some of the progression is kinda vague but it's not hard to figure out where to go next.
I've not played the English version but did play the Japanese original. Actually, I own it Were Namco going to bring this to the west? I ask as they have nothing to do with the games development.
I'm aware of that. Yes they were planning on publishing it themselves for western markets. According to some user on YouTube he worked for a US publisher and said Masaya had already had the game translated when they got it for evaluation and had been shopping it to other publishers but they ended up passing as they felt it wouldn't compete in the market and the game was already about 3 years old at that time. He figures Namco ended up passing for same reason as they were going to publish it in late 94. Funny part Namco was going to rename it Star Quest.
Unfortunately not. Considering that EGM reviewed the final version localized by Namco you'd think this lost localization would surface but has yet to emerge. As for a collector owning a review copy I have yet to hear of one that has it in their possession. This is the reason why this fan translation is such a big deal. I look forwarding to trying it out since I played a bit of the original version years ago but never go to far into it. I remember seeing the announcement for the translation release but it honestly kind of slipped my mind. Glad you brought this up to remind me.
