Source: http://battlefront3.net/2013/03/star-wars-first-assault-predecessor-to-star-wars-battlefront-3-but/ To sum it up, Battlefront 3 was being considered for release. LucasArts planned on releasing Star Wars: First Assault, a multiplayer FPS, to test the waters and see if Battlefront 3 would be sell and be profitable. Battlefront 3 will not use any assets created by Free Radical, and will instead borrow code from First Assault. I'm not entirely sure if First Assault is an online only FPS or if it's like Battlefront where it can be played both online and offline. Hopefully it's not another dime a dozen CoD clone. I think we have enough of those LucasArts, we don't need another one with a Star Wars skin. Development was going well enough, but then Disney happened. “Last September, when executives at LucasFilm—the parent company of LucasArts—found out that Disney had signed an agreement to purchase the company, things got murky. LucasFilm froze all hiring and new game announcements, our source says. They had planned to announce First Assault and launch a closed beta by the end of September—which explains the Xbox listing leak on October 1—and First Assault was supposed to be out this spring. So since September, employees at LucasArts have been working on the game with no knowledge as to whether or not it will actually come out. According to our source, LucasArts is “bleeding talent†as employees wait to see what executives at Disney and LucasFilm want to do with First Assault and other games the studio is working on.†Back when Disney acquired Star Wars they claimed they wanted to focus on casual social games. Not good. Not good at all.
well i still need to play 1 and 2, but this looks like a game that could really work. shame when things like this happen, but i didnt have high hopes for disney and the star wars franchise. but if the game is that close to / ready for at least beta, why not finish it and throw it out there. Republic commando could use a revisit too
Hell yes! Republic Commando was a fantastic game, one of the few first person shooters I actually like. I personally would love to see a spiritual sequel where you play as an Imperial squad sometime during episodes 4, 5, and 6. What do you mean? First Assault or Battlefront 3? Both are unclear regarding forced social crap. Disney only said they intend to focus on developing cell phone and social media games using the Star Wars IP. I don't recall anything about forcing those into retail games. My worry is that after developing casual garbage they won't even bother making good retail Star Wars games anymore, or at least ones that fans want.
Just when I hear social aspects, usually DRM is rolled into it. It would be surprising if they decide to not do that. You know, companies make stupid moves these days.
Given no other choice I'd rather forget about DRM and just make every game an MMO. Then by nature everyone will have to be online to get the game's full experience.
WHAT!? They wouldn't?! Awwwww sheiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit. I want to see Peter Pan blast Nemo in the face, for trading on his turf.
I think you missed the point...Pulp Fiction was released by a Disney-owned company, and now my joke is ruined due to overexplaining.
theres also a bit of killing in pirates of the Caribbean. i don't think a company like disney would have coughed up so much cash for the star wars franchise, while social and casual games may be their focus currently i don't think they'll stop the big star wars games altogether, at least not the ones they deem profitable they may simply want to tie big game releases to the new movies, the casual and social move may simply be to claw back some cash in the immediate / short term
Bummer. I went to a store the other day and saw Battlefront for sale for $10. The checkout line was massive so I returned the next day to buy it.....but someone else got it.
Ugh, if it wasn't for the TIE fighters and X-wings you'd never even guess from those shots that it was a Star Wars game. Looks like just another generic FPS.
Unfortunately, I agree. I'm hoping the game plays like a combination of Battlefront and Republic Commando, but I'm not holding my breath.
Yeah, it sucks I really wanted Battlefront 3 to some out, especially because Battlefront 1 and 2 had really crappy online (which can't even be played on Xbox now). I really liked the Galactic Conquest mode in 2, and hoped it would make the jump to this gen. That said, since Battlefront started out as a Battlefield 1942 clone, the idea that it would become a Battlefield/CoD clone (tell me you can tell the two apart) isn't a stretch...
