This is exactly what I was about to say. Perhaps if the game was hacked to take advantage of the speed it would be a neat little trick, but as it stands it's just speeding everything up by X%.

The problem is the trend. Modding, overclocking and circuit bending (all pseudo skills/arguably art) have hit mainstream enthusiasts. This is undeniable; even recently Futurama had an episode about overclocking. Couple this with everyone's desire to be unique and special, and you get masses more than willing to sacrifice a few or a lot of their games to be apart of the "in" crowd. The scary part is that this has already happened and will only get worse unless people speak out about it and try to educate; sure there's a large supply of many games nobody will miss, but just encouraging this mindset is irresponsible because it spreads like wildfire.

One can argue "you're being elitist, who are you to appreciate someone's property better than they?", well it may be elitist, but people are passionate about this out of experience. Discouraging mod projects doesn't just save games, it saves people from themselves. Everyone starts out modding--it's easy, especially now with the instructable/Youtube culture you can impress people without putting in the time and dedication to learn the actual science of electronics. The sacrifices seem small at first, but I definitely regret the losses I incurred over 12 years getting to where I am now. It all has to do with education and experience; the sooner you graduate from modding/exploiting other people's work and start creating for yourself, not only will you get a better product (very few of the mods out there have completely intelligent design since the people most enthusiastic about sharing their work are newbies themselves), you'll get far more fulfillment and esteem from technical peers, and more importantly you'll be smarter, more discerning and objective and in a small way the world will be a better place.

Ofcourse it won't vanish. The fear is that they will become reduced in number and far more expensive. As Calpis and APE said, it's about the trend. People often don't realize how big these things can get.

Example of the trend? I bought a Doom cart years ago thinking I was going to build my own Starfox2.

    Never learned to solder.

That's an example of the better outcome. But while you still have an intact Doom cart, others probably tried removing the maskrom and destroyed the board. Then they either quit or maybe got some more boards. I'm certain some after seeing the high prices Star Fox 2 carts were selling for thought they could make them too and make a quick buck. And instead they just destroyed some carts.

    FPGAs are the solution.
I have heard that the Super FX is like a reprogrammed DSP.

There were 20 million plus Model T fords made, how many of them do you think still exist? The PC Engine CD-ROM2 unit sold in the millions too, I do buy everyone I find when I am in Japan, but I hardly ever see it, even on Yahoo auctions it doesn't appear very much and there is no gaurantee it is going to work.

ET on the Atari 2600 sold in the millions and I still know people that want to pick up the cartridge as they find it hard to find...

l_oliveire speaks the truth as circuit benders should be put up against the wall and shot, as should the people that use LSDJ to make samey horrible sound chip tunes for DJ sets at computer game events.

Out of all the ET carts I've ever seen, I own the only one.

NEVER have I see a wild ET cart anywhere outside of eBay, aside from the sole cart I own. And I got it from someone at Digit Press for $1.

I don't think E.T. for the 2600 is a good example because I see loose carts frequently go for as little as $5.00 shipped on eBay.

Actually I think you'll find they will become pretty rare in our lifetime, with bitrot and the expected lifetime of the MASK ROM chips, they should have about 50 years of life left TOPS if they're kept in perfect storage conditions.

But by all means, the game is beyond horrid and MILLIONS were produced. So why isn't it worth $0.01?

Right, because there are fewer and fewer copies.

Playchoice 10 PPU chips. Heck their price has already risen since a few months ago when I'd attempted to ask for one right on this very site.

I don't dislike LSDJ, because I made my own LSDJ cart (out of a pirate GB cart with a TSOP flash chip) and I happen to own a 1st gen 1989 GameBoy. With it, LSDJ is a nice toy.

Again, it goes down to who is using it and how it's used.

I believe that many many popular games will become more expensive and rare. Many people don't know what they have and just throw them away, or try to butcher them.

So I see Jamtex point and APE's.

Sony CXA1645s have gone up quite a bit too for retrofitting purposes. The later models are starting to get pricy as well for the same exact reason.
