Hey Assembler forums im looking to get into psx development simply for the fact that it is my favorite console. i would like an dev environment that i can do everything in but also has alot of documentation and what not. A community would be cool too. i have already found psone dev studio 2006 but has no documentation or community. Any help would be appreciated.
Unluckily there seems to be no active psx development community anymore. Some years ago there used to be the psxdev yahoo group which saw activity once in a while, but now it is as dead as a desert. The documentation about PlayStation development is very old, incomplete and often wrong and if no trial and error is done it is hard to get something done. I am the author of the PSXSDK, and while there is little documentation for my SDK due to it being a one-man show, it can be improved. Don't get me wrong, don't use any other devkits, they're all very old and while my SDK is not really complete, the more people use/work on it the faster it is going to get support for things. You can get my SDK at http://code.google.com/p/psxsdk Using Linux or any other operating system is recommended, but Cygwin on Windows will do. Some months I tried to get a PlayStation development forum going, but I had no success. If you'd like to start a community, you can email me at tails92@gmail.com and tell me if you know of any interested people who can join the community.
What's the best way to get the PSONE to connect to the PC? Mine has no COM/serial ports and even though I have a yaroze - Ive lost the cables and software. Figures. Can you build a USB cable that works with an Xplorer or Action Replay?
There currently isnt a USB solution for xplorer/AR/GS at the moment, although I am sure I have seen it discussed here in the past. You can DIY a USB serial onto the PSone, see my posts or click the link to my blog in my sig. @tails92 I would be interested in a forum about psxdev, I am always playing around with mine but my programming skills are pretty limited.
Me too. PS DEV FTW! So you want to do PS Development and want to use a PSone? Haha, buy a PS (PSX as many people call them incorrectly) and get a Xplorer. Yes you can hack in a Serial port, but it is a lot more work for nothing. Better yet, and a easier way to learn would be to buy a Net Yaroze and start off from there. Try and get one, with all the manuals so it is straight forward. I just can't afford one (yet) haha. Don't expect it to be easy! When I started the other day, it was very very hard. The documentation is minimal, and there is no one to ask for help really... I had a hard time even setting up my communication with the PS through the Xplorer! (faulty cable in the end)... I am more than happy to set up a website for PS Dev with Forums, Chat and Downloads. I am happy to have 4 Admins (Haunted360 and Tails92 at this stage) to keep it under control. I am also happy, for it to be linked to and from ASSEMbler Forums.
Yep it's a pain in the royal arse, it's easier just to run your ps-exe's through an emulator less hassle all around, epsxe and pcsx-r work good enough for me.
Ah, but now you can (always could) run them from CD-RW's for gameplay testing on a real console
