acording to http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTE3NzU which again links to the steam forums, the steam beta is finally coming! or should come in the next days as the linux client has been added to steams "CDR" database. excited! valve has finally announced a beta for steam, atleast the internal beta will start next week. the external one will start sometime in october, for 1000 people, and 1 valve game. http://blogs.valvesoftware.com/linux/
This is a really great step in the right direction. Awesome stuff. Would love to see the differences in performance on the same game and hardware but different OS's... Mac, Linux, Windows....
anything using opengl should be excellent, only major issues i can see are with sound, pulseaudio / alsa / oss, pulse audio being the main culprit, it doesn't always like playing well with others lol . cant wait for steam on linux
I'd put money on the "one valve game" being L4D2. Thanks to the efficiency of the Linux kernel it runs appx 20 fps faster than its Windows counterpart, and it wasn't even finished being ported when they announced that.
im wondering if you will have to buy the linux versions seperatly from the windows versions, eg if u already own L4D2 will u just be able to download the linux version, or have to buy it again
i bet it'll be portal according to their "cdr" database, thats a game where they dont make any loss i guess, since everybody has it anyway lol. on the other hand, their also launching steam workshop for l4d2 including linux suppot, mid october, so that would point more in the direction of l4d2... but it could mean that the client will be at an open-beta/extended-beta there already, so they might add l4d2 to portal, later? the beta sign-up is open! http://steamcommunity.com/games/221410/announcements/detail/1783684043532816475
I signed up. I don't really have much hope for actually getting in though. Waiting anxiously for steam linux though, especially since I made a 100% switch to linux from mac os.
