With Hell pretty much a sub zero frozen tundra and my decision to get a gaming laptop being one of the conditions. I figured, why not get on the steam train? But it's an overwheming sea of good and bad. I have no idea where to even begin. I'll probably do Indie Box for a year too just to Get Dem Physical copies and discover stuff I otherwise wouldn't play. But beyond that I'm totally clueless. Aside from Cave shooters being on there, what's worth playing?
It'd be hard to be any more vague if you tried. All you gave us to work with is that you like bullet hell shooters (specifically by Cave, which isn't indie). You got anything else, perhaps? But so as not to leave you totally hanging: Try Antichamber and The Stanley Parable. Don't read up on the stories - best to go in blind. VVVVV is great too.
I have VVVVVV on PS4 GOOD GOD IS THAT HARD. to be less vague, Platformers, shmups, goofy games that defy any logical definition.
If you like bullet hell, I quite like Grid Runner Revolution, it's a nice take on it. Although *definitely* use a mouse, it's much better: http://store.steampowered.com/app/27810/ Space Giraffe is pretty good as well, but it's very marmite as it can be very difficult to work out what's going on: http://store.steampowered.com/app/27800/
Yeah, even as a die hard Jeff Minter fan I find it incredibly frustrating sometimes. Gridrunner is much more relaxing/easier to figure out WTF is going on though. There's a demo available that shows you the first 20 or so levels
Not sure what sort of games youre looking for but Squad is a fantastic fps that isnt getting too much attention for some reason. Its in early access but still very much playable. Also War for the Overworld if youre a fan of dungeon keeper.
I'd recommend these. They may not be hidden gems per-say but since I think you might be new to PC gaming I'll recommend em anyways. Recettear http://store.steampowered.com/app/70400/ Mount and Blade Warband http://store.steampowered.com/app/48700/ E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy http://store.steampowered.com/app/91700/ Astebreed http://store.steampowered.com/app/283680/ Fairy Bloom Fresia http://store.steampowered.com/app/214590 and Eschatos http://store.steampowered.com/app/378770
Indie Box has gone downhill recently, won't be long before they just send you a CDr in a padded envelope. Games I like are: Brothers A Tale of Two Sons Bastion Deadlight Grow Home Odallus the Dark Call Mutant Mudds Shadow Complex XeoDrifter Out There Somewhere Volgarr the Viking (basically Rastan) Oceanhorn (basically Zelda) Dust an Elysian Tail Oniken You don't need a gaming laptop for most of these, I play a lot of them on a Bay Trail tablet with an 8bitDo Pro controller.
I might make a tier list later but for now I would put the following in GOD TIER: Dust an Elysian Tale Shadow Complex Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition (MAKE SURE you get the definitive edition) Funnily enough these games are all metroidvania titles. They were just the first that came to mind. I would suggest playing Ori first because its highly addictive and has some very unusual mechanics. Once you master them you will be zipping around and doing incredibly challenging acrobatic stunts. By the end of the game you will basically be able to fly around and traverse impossible heights. Shadow Complex is a much more grounded game, its a 2.5D metroidvania shooter game set in a secret high-tech facility. Think CIA not Aperture Science though. Dust is a beautiful hand drawn style game with a focus on RPG elements. Yes its got a furry influence but its done well and not in your face. Its a bit shorter than I would have wished, although I did play it for 8 hours a day for like 2 weekends lol. -doulomb
Dust and Shadow Complex are on PS4 and I'll be getting those Actually a lot of the suggested games are on PSN or XBL. if it's a XBOX double dip that's fine since I'll likely never play anything on an XBOX again. Unless I already have it. Not nessessarily new, My old latop was home to a lot of Doujin games I grabbed off Doujin Style. But in terms of actually buying games on steam, I am quite new yes. Eschatos is a game I've wanted for a while but never bothered to get on 360. Is Crimzon Clover on Steam?
So you want games that are on Steam but not consoles? I think that's going to severely limit the selection - if a dev jumps through all the hoops to get on Steam, it's likely he'll have done (or at least tried) similar with Sony and Microsoft since there's a lot of profit to be made there, too. I suggest you look into non-Steam platforms. For example, look around itch.io for a bit - a lot of the stuff on there is even free or pay-what-you-want. Random bonus tip: Seiklus.
There is a good Chunk of games not on PS4 at least. When I'm on Siliconera I see a game think "Oh that looks cool" then read "On Steam" with no PSN release.
Physchonuats is currently on sale: https://www.humblebundle.com/store/psychonauts Not indie but great!
Turok 1 on Steam was a great release (^-^) Albeit being a N64 game but still... as for actual indie titles i suggest trying out is "Back in 1995" http://store.steampowered.com/app/433380/
HERE WE GO http://store.steampowered.com/app/115800/?snr=1_5_9__300 I totally forgot. Any one play Owl boy yet?
I haven't, at least not yet. Imho it looks suspiciously good, like they may have gone for style over substance. Reviews seem to very much not support this theory, but either way, with my backlog I can afford to wait for a price drop or two.
I'm currently playing Owlboy and Shovel Knight and for me they are both very good, at least in the start. I also enjoyed Shantae and the pirate's curse some time ago.
I didn't like shantae that much. I felt like it was too much of a throwback to the GBA era and not enough modern polish and options. I guess what I mean is that the best retro-modern games present a fusion of old-skool and new-school, but Shantae feels like a relic. Also all the women in the game are ridiculously insanely hot. Too distracting -doulomb
