Hey everyone, For those PC gamers on here that use Steam, you may be interested to know that I’ve started a petition with regards to the inability of being able to change your account name. Even though this may seem like a pointless feature to have, since you can change your community ID, there’s still a feeling of disconnect for many people. It would be like changing your Twitter @, but still having to use the old one to login. I’d really appreciate any support and shares. https://www.change.org/p/valve-corp...llow-steam-users-to-change-their-account-name Thanks in advance guys.
Changing the displayed username is easy but changing the account's name? Yea that would be a huge pain to maintain for no real reason.
Don't get me wrong, but how would this be something to "maintain"? You don't HAVE to change your account name if you don't want to, it's about having the freedom to do so.
Yes but now think of how many things would need to updated every time someone does? Sure it can and would be automated but why? IMHO It's not necessary and would have zero user impact on anything.
Why would it? Every account probably has a numerical or otherwise UUID tied to the account. No sane system would use a username as a unique id.
hmm I didn't think about that actually, OK you have some ground there but other then a tiny OCD issue what is the benefit of being able to change the login name?
I dunno personally I think the display name and login name should be the same because I have forgotten login names before -,-
You might be able to get some support on that angle since yea when I first changed my username I tried logging in with it. I can guarantee you Valve won't get off their lazy booties tho since its not a major issue.
Why would they spend money and resources on something as little as this? No-one other than you can see your username, and I can imagine it'd be a pain in the ass installing a system like that into Steam anyways...
You're right there lol. I think it's silly when all sites seperate display and login name... have a username! I already have an alternate ID to you the site owners... well, probably several, at least a numerical ID, my IP at the time and my e-mail. Just make it simple!
Yep, and that's why I started a petition. I believe if enough people show interest, there's at least a chance something may be done. Totally agree, there's no reason why it can't be done. Also, just to give a bit of an update: The petition has gotten 5 more supporters, so I'd like to thank those people, as I assume they're members of this site, since this is the only place it's really getting any attention. Remember, every little bit helps and is appreciated.
I don't see the benefit of this. You can already change your username, why would you need to be able to change your login name? Noone sees it.
The login name not being public is besides the point really. The benefit being that it would allow people to login with their current username instead of one they no longer like. Incorrect, I just tried this myself, and I can confirm that it does not work. Good thought though.
Well if it does work you, then I take it you registered when e-mail addresses were used as the login names. Also, I believe that would mean even if you changed the e-mail address tied to your account, you'd still have to use the e-mail address you use now to login.
Just checked to be sure. There's no email field really like Origin or Ubisomething that asks email or login/name/whatever. But hey, you can even choose your URL name and the profile name to different names! My three changeable names are the same though. n_n Why don't you revert your profile name and url names back to your login name? Easy peasy!
Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately it would be defeating the purpose, as many people would still be stuck with a name they no longer want and/or like.
