Eh, it's out tomorrow?? Will probably prep a HDD and stick it on there, or I might use virtual box to have a look. I've already got linux installed so I'll be having a look for any added benefits of a pure game OS. But I'll definitely be giving this a try in some form or other. They really need to start porting their big titles over to Linux now in order to make this thing stick, I can't see many people using the stream feature myself, though I might use it to extend my main computer to the bedroom via the laptop. I might also try a VPN from down south to see what the connection/streaming is like from there. Thanks for the heads up.
Probably not in the nearby future, I rarely play on my 4 year old PC and when I do I can run games easily.
I might make a small partition and see if I can't get it running. It's always fun to try something new, especially so if it's free! They say you need to be skilled with Linux to get it installed properly- I'm assuming that has to do with drivers.
Or to avoid having too much support to do and get a bad reputation from it. This way they tell people that if it doesn't work or isn't user friendly; it will be in the future.
My question is, and this pertains to those who have modded PS3's, could this be installed as the OtherOS++ for a CFW? They've gotten different types of Linux to run up to now, why not this?
From memory there was no GPU acceleration in OtherOS so running SteamOS on it would be kind of useless. Also completely different CPU architecture etc
Yeah i'll check it out, got a partition ready and waiting, i already use Linux so shouldn’t be a problem. That being said, here is the Sys Req from steam: [h=2]What are the SteamOS Hardware Requirements?[/h] Processor: Intel or AMD 64-bit capable processor Memory: 4GB or more RAM Hard Drive: 500GB or larger disk Video Card: NVIDIA graphics card (AMD and Intel graphics support coming soon!) Additional: UEFI boot support USB port for installation a few Curious requirements eg UEFI and NVidia only at this point, although may be able to get the ati drivers working manually. Based on debian 7.1 is seems. also seems it wants to eat up the whole HDD http://store.steampowered.com/steamos/buildyourown
UEFI, sure. NVidia only? Fine. But at least a 1tb disk (according to install instructions)?! I'm not liking that one bit. I was hoping to make a small, say 120GB partition on my secondary HDD so I could test it out. Looks like that won't work... If someone manages to figure out if it can be installed on a partition without wiping the entire drive clean, I may consider running it from an external drive. Ugh, I don't want to think about the speed (or lack thereof).
lists 500gb, but as the system is open source, eg only proprietary elements being the likes of nvidia / amd drivers and the steam client itself, and being based on debian, it's only a matter of time before better install options pop up. i dont think valve put a lot of thought into their install process as of yet, being they recommend use of clonezilla for the "restore image" it is however compatible with standard debian packages and repositories meaning you can add whatever you want to the system. keep in mind it is designed to be used as a "living room, entertainment" system rather than a gaming desktop. I cannot test as of yet because i have neither nvidia or uefi hardware, not a spare 500gb drive lol. better to wait at this point. it's really not the finished product at all
Nah. I have Linux installed already. No need for ANOTHER OS on my system, also doesn't support AMD... That's a lot of gamers out with mid-range builds.
Dude are you looking for these I have the same problem why i'll tell you why cause some guy stole them
I have all the pieces, except for an unused 500GB drive. I just want to test it, whether it be designed for desktop or not. I figured with Linux installations going pretty quickly I could slap this onto a partition, play about with it for a bit, review it and then just get rid of it. FTFY, and thanks for the internal chuckle. Very good image to have on hand...
that was also my plan but not looking promising however if you want a similar experience, download debian 7.1, install it then graphics drivers then install steam and have it auto start in big picture mode
This. At least for now. Steam works perfectly in (K,X,L)Ubuntu and Debian, and most other modern linux distros, and all those distros are way easier to install, at least they have partition manager so you won't have to erase whole HDD. For me Steam (native and win32 under wine) works fine in Kubuntu 12.04 and 13.10, so no reason to try SteamOS as it is now (low hardware compatibility)
Install an alpha linux distro? whats the phrase I'm looking for................"fuck no" I'll wait until its a tad stable
I wanted to give it a try, but I only have a 120 GB and 80 GB HDD to spare. Oh well, Linux Mint, PC Linux OS and Ubuntu still work well enough for me.
