Strange official N64 controller

Hey can someone tell me what this is? I just picked it up at a thrift shop.

Which one is supposed to be the odd controller?
I think the clear one was from the Play It Loud series, or something like that.

No I'm talking about the analog stick. The purple is the regular one.

Is that a digital stick? The N64 has an analog.
What is the date on that thing?

It was just replaced with a "gamecube like" analog stick, like they say.

fyi, from what I recall reading those gamecube style replacement sticks actually have issues on the ranges they report.

link83 can probably shed more info, I believe he was involved in the thread I originally read that in

 

It would have problem with the real range as the stick is shorter, and would hit the edges more.

Get a replacement gamecube control stick.

You could also get a Hori Mini Pad 64 (I think that's what it's called). It's basically an N64 controller in a different, smaller form factor with a Gamecube-style analog stick. They can be a bit pricey, but they're worth it.

 

That's where this one has come from.

 

I think it's just an aftermarket replacement. I'm pretty sure I've seen Cube-like thumbsticks before (though saying that I can't find any like this on Ebay or Amazon right now).

I wish someone was selling original style replacements personally, I used to buy them off ZTNet

there is flashable code which can be used with a microprocessor setup to use a real Gamecube joystick which will automatically adjust the output values to valid n64 ranges (or you can go beyond the n64s standard range limit, which can cause issues in some games)

I can't find the original source forum thread about this project, they had some videos of various games reacting to being fed ranges over the original controllers maximum ranges though. Turok would bend your player view farther than normally able, Blast Corps would wig out and not handle it properly at all though.
