I was filming Final Fight Revenge on the Saturn for Retro Core 24 when it crashed for the 2nd time (First time the screen just froze). This crash was very odd. First of all the audio kept playing as normal but the image whent crazy as if someone had just pulled out the cable connecting it to the TV. Take a look at the images below. 1. All looks fine as I try to select a character but with one problem ! The polygon model isn't there ! 2. Next the background image is replaced with yellow and orange lines 3. The screen starts to go completely screwey starting from the bottom. 4. Then the whole image changes in to this mess that is scrolling upwards. As it scrolls the image becomes weaker and weaker. The sound is still playing fine though. 5. Finally the screen goes like the below image for a second or two before turning completely black. All of the above happens withing the space of 3 seconds. The only reason I could capture the pictures was because I was videoing it at the time so was able to capture each frame. The saturn wasn't knocked or touched when this happened. Does anyone have any ideas? Yakumo
Run the game on another system. I doubt it could be the hardware but you never know. DOes the disk have any scratches on it?
The disc is perfect and works fine. The 4MBIT Ram is fine too. I played this for a good few hours yesterday (poor me) without any problems. Today however it crashed twice ! The temperature was 36 degrees in this room when I came home tonight so I switched on the air conditioner for a good 30 minutes to bring the temperature down to 26 degrees before starting my Saturn. Yakumo
I was going to say temperature, 36 degrees is bloody boiling but you'd think 26 ought to be alright. Maybe take the case off and give it blast of compressed air? Saturn's shouldn't be that sensitive to dust, though...
Key word "should". My PSX gives me trouble on hot days but works fine the rest of the time, and the temperature in my room certainly wasn't as high as 36C.
probably the heat, but at the temp i wouldnt be shocked if it could almost possibly melt the pins in the cart slot.
Yeah, I could have been the heat I guess. This Saturn is a first Gen system that I found in the rain over 8 years ago. It gets used almost every other day. About a year back the CD drive died then started to be picky. I kept with it though, then after a month it started to run perfectly again !! This is one hell of a hard nut ! I know I shouldn't say this but it's true. My PSX is starting to fuck up the audio due to the pins in the socket at the back. Now I hardly ever use this system plus it's one of the last old style PSX machines. Build quality again ...... Yakumo
The background of the control panel screen on my previous Saturn used to flicker and then finally disappeared in the weeks before it finally gave up the ghost altogether, though now its replacement has started doing the same - could this symptom be a guaranteed way of knowing when a console is on its proverbial last legs?
Can you turn the Saturn upside down to get it to read cd's easier, when it starts to get picky, like you can with a PSX? I've never tried this with the Saturn, although turning my PSX upside to get it to read cd's worked well for quite a number of years.
Once I was playing XmnVsSf and suddenly it crashed, spitting debug codes on screen, while music was playing nonstop. I believe it was the 4MBIT cart that wasn't seated properly on the slot.
i highly doubt it's the heat, 36c is nothing... my macbook goes up to 80c under full load and it's still here , idle is 60c or so... maybe humidity levels causing the laser to fail?
Yakumo will correct me if I'm wrong here, but I seriously doubt he was measuring the CPU temperature. The temps inside the Saturn could be a lot higher, especially with no fan system inside.
Yes you are right Alchy. I was not measuring the CPU temperature. I still find it hard to beleive that a the Saturn's CPU could get that hot though. I mean, it was only running for about 20 minutes before that happened. It's been fine since then though. Yakumo
