He used to send me 2 GByte of analog data (MPEG2) every week, so that would not be a big problem, I guess. :)

No you can't unless you have the digital receiver. I own a HD TV but no digital receiver box so all my TV shows are in SD from the analogue antenna then unscaled which looks pretty turd to be honest. If your friend has a digital tuner box then he can do HD programming but as far as a signal from a normal antenna it's going to be standard resolution I'm afraid.

    Ah, I see.

Where I live all you need is a DVB-T receiver to get digital television. I think it doesn't support HD, though.

I was thinking there was something like that for Japan.
What about "ISDB-T"? Isn't it something like that?

Would be cool if something like this would be all I need. (Picture comes from that forum I linked to earlier.)
Not sure what all those wires are for... is that Cable TV?

I believe all new TVs now do have a Digitial TV reciever built in, I know my Sharp Aquos does and the picture quality is great, where the analogue channels do look like crap on a LCD screen...

Seriously, I can't believe no one's (or hardly no one) has commentated on just how stupid this idea is. Are you truly that obsessed with anime and actually understand it as well? Go be a real fan, buy the DVD's.

On top of that having just TV Tokyo really isn't enough, seeing as there's loads of shows on other channels, as well as series that are only aired in certain regions before they hit DVD etcetera etcetera. I'm sorry but this really sounds like some dumb (obsessed with anime) otaku's idea.

It's no more "stupid" than people:

Buying dev kit without being able to code for it
    Buying sealed games
Buying games in languages they don't understand
Buying every game for a system regardless of if they might enjoy that game
    Etc
    Etc

People are free to do what they like, if someone wants TV Tokyo streamed live in HD, so be it. Who are you to say what people should do and if it's stupid?

I was talking to my friend today and he said it's cool if I give him the hardware.

We decided to drop the live-stream idea, though... bandwidth issues. Instead, it would probably be better to have some remote control interface that allows me to schedule recordings.

He said Japanese digital TV is DRM protected, and we'll need something called "Friio". Not sure what *exactly* it does and what other devices need to be used with it.

I'm going to try to ask "DarkFritz" from the German forum I linked to earlier. Maybe he'll be kind enough to tell me how to set this up. :)

You can also go for a Dreambox (for sattelite) and set it up for IP viewing. Then you can watch almost realtime. (it even works with XBMC!)
    (This is only for SD)

Most important question that seems to have been forgotten :
What upload bandwidth does he have? You would need at least 5Mbits of upload bandwidth to do the job. (For HD - encoded in H264)

You could get away with 512Kbps - 1Mbit in SD as long as its encoded in H264.

Thanks for your message, DeMoN X.
We decided to drop the live streaming idea and go for a remote schedule and capture plan.

I found out that I need a "Friio" device (white model).
Unfortunately, it's VERY hard to find now... even Yahoo! Auctions go for >Â¥50,000.

Or does anyone here know how to get one but cheaper?

Remote recording seems easy enough, just stick a Japan DTV card in an old crappy PC with a nice sized HD and install VNC on the machine. UltraVNC lets you xfer files back and forth and offers remote screen viewing to manage recordings/desktop whatever.

I'm not sure what recording software that could be used however, i'll look it up.

Because of the "Copy Once" or "Copy Never" rights in Japanese TV streams, I need the Friio device, which ignores the copyright stuff. I'm not sure if another device can do that, too?

Hmm I thought ISDB was the same as DVB-T is in the UK, there would be a revolt if the BBC started to copy protect shit lol

Umm, I guess you could just record with an Analog TV card. Downsides No HD and im not sure about the analog lifespan. You might need to check that out.

Fillo (sp) seems to be what your needing, not sure how it works - you'll need to figure out what it does exactly.

Yeah Japanese tv is.....for lack of a better term WEIRD. what's with all those variety shows and Obsticle course shows anyway?

HG is pretty much the only remotly entertaining thing Japanese TV has given us outside of anime lately.

Nah, seen it. Typical cardboard can't act crap I'm afraid to say. The problem is that I can predict pretty much what the actors will say or do because all Japanese TV dramas are the same :-(

Hard Gay was last year. nobody gives a shit about him any more. This years no talent nut is some guy who does this annoying song filled with jokes wearing nothing but a pair of briefs.

Next year he'll be gone and we'll have a new idiot. Like this EVERY year.

Depends on the area, no? My sister-in-law has no cable. Just a flat screen, and some of the channels are in HD. I guess she could have the proper receiver in her box but I'm going to say no. I was pretty shocked, actually. But yeah, we're back to the problem of nothing worth watching (in HD or Low D).
