To my knowledge, there were actually three separate attempts to create a fourth installment of the Streets Of Rage series, and the Tokyopia video comes from the later Dreamcast effort. Incredibly, this was turned down for development - in favour of Zombie Revenge, no less! - because some foolish Sega executive didn't realise just how important the franchise was. Of course, the prototype was being pitched under its original Japanese title of Bare Knuckle, though you'd probably have expected a high-ranking member of Sega to know that!

A new sequel to Streets Of Rage was also in mind when Core Design showed off the concept for what later became Fighting Force, and this was rejected due to Sega already having its own plans for the series. Once again, it was presumed that this game would have been quickly forgotten under its Japanese name (Dynamite Deka), so for the US and EU release it was given a new license and released as Die Hard Arcade. If memory serves me correctly, it's possible that SpikeOut was also considered at one point as a new Streets Of Rage, but don't quote me on this.

P.S. Who produced the Dreamcast version of Streets Of Rage? I'm sure it wasn't Ancient, as Yuzo Koshiro himself has denied any involvement with that project in the past. Since it was given the proverbial cold shoulder by SOA, I presume it was from Japan? Anyway, it would be great to know for sure...

Actually it was them, Yuzo Koshiro is the one who leaked the videos to tokyo pop.

I believe Core Designs approached SEGA with releasing Fighting Force as a Streets of Rage game but Sega ditched because they had their own plans, whatever those plans were, they were most certainly not Dynamite Deka which came a lot before Fighting Force (and was co-developed by Sega Technical Institute of Sonic and Comix Zone game).

So it was Koshiro himself who leaked those prototype videos of Streets Of Rage 4? I was under the impression he stopped having anything to do with the series after the third game, though now it's obvious there were plans for a great comeback - if only those clips had been given Yuzo's musical treatment...

In fact they look something like the early Virtua Fighter game shots from the VF History video on the Dreamcast Virtua Fighter 3 disc.

What proof is there that these designs really were intended for SoR4?
