I had an idea for a topic: just post stupid shit you've heard people say when you're out doing stuff. There is no shortage of stupidity in the world, so it shouldn't be too hard. It can be a story or just a small quotation. Whatever you feel like posting. I'll start off with a couple examples.

Tonight I was at Gamestop, and there were some college-age kids huddled around the tablets (yes, Gamestop has tablets now for some reason). The guy using the tablet was trying to calculate "twelve times a hundred divided by two", so I said "600". He ignored me, and continued to try to calculate the answer. Eventually he gave up, and said, "Man, this thing can't even do simple algebra."

I was at a restaurant one night, and I overheard this gem: "Sure, murder is illegal, but that doesn't mean you can't do it..." That one's a little scary in addition to being stupid.

I am utterly amazed, on a daily basis, to see just how stupid people can be.

unfortunatly advancements man has made in many areas during his evolution and development has meant that in some cases natural selection and nature have been circumvented / bypassed whereas stupid people have been allowed to live longer and also breed.

I've overheard some fairly random stuff.

I was at a bus stop and I pulled out my headphones because I had been listening to music for the past 4 hours. I listened in on a convo regarding overclocking- my kind of thing.
However, these kids were talking about how they overclocked their i5 processors to 4.2MHz (megahertz).

Geez. I hear this, and I read for sale posts on Craigslist with people boasting about the 8mb of ram in their laptop. It's not that hard to understand that it's GHz and GB.

4.2MHz! Whoa! That's almost as fast as a Genesis!

Sometimes stupidity is paradoxical, as in: how are you able to overclock your computer when you don't even know what you're overclocking it to?

You just change it from the BIOS setup, there's really no thought involved at all.

I see. I think it's more complicated than that with my motherboard. You have to adjust the multipliers and do tests to make sure it's not overheating, etc.

Bring back jumpers, dip switches and the occasional lead pencil for overclocking.

Worst I constantly keep on hearing is people referring to "Grand Theft Auto IV" (four) , as "G.T.A eye-vee".

Normally I wouldnt mind if kids do this, maybe the school hasent started teaching them about Roman Numerals yet (even tough my parents thought me way before I started going to school), but I hear more and more adults referring to it in that manner, its sad really :(

I loose a bit of faith in humanity every time some one does that.

PS As for overclocking, bring back swappable clock crystals!!!

Edit: And the difference between soldering and welding seem to confuse a hell of a lot of people aswell, "are you going to weld my machine to install a chip? " /don't worry the grammar is deliberate, that's how they ask me most of the time....

I guess he just might be used to iDevices, and Siri is good enough to recognize and work with mathematical expressions?

Murder isn't even outright illegal and there are differing types of "ending another human being's life" such as manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter, homicide of differing degrees, etc. Different punishments for different crimes as well. If you narrowly define what you mean by murder then sure by all means you can't do it without a punishment involved but unlike dumping oil into the sewer you can have your actions result in the termination of a human life and not go to prison for it under some circumstances.

    Me too.

I dont understand what the issue is with that comment anyway....

If something is illegal, you are still able to do it. You can do what ever you like, its just whether you will end up in jail afterwards or not.

Working at a bar you hear some dumb things at times. A bum once walked in with a bit of money, had a few rounds, and started spouting off shit. My favorite part of his conversations went like this between me and him:

Him: "I'm a rich artist. I has millions!"
Me: "If you're so f%$@ing rich, why you pushing a cart around and dressed in rags?"
    Him: "Well..."
Then he left without another word. Care to guess why?

Bingo. I also like trying to discuss with people why a law isn't necessary a (for we Americans) constitutional and thus is unconstitutional and arguably an "illegal" law. People look at you funny and seem to think that simply because a law is a law it must be legal to be a law and couldn't possible be something that shouldn't have been passed in the first place. Sorry folks but that is some false logic there as congress passes laws all the time that are ruled unconstitutional on a state and federal level.

Personally I've mentally inserted "codpiece" into those sentences. Makes life more amusing.

In my university, some biology teacher allegedly said: "It seems that the wave/particle duality is not true after all"

And she has the right to teach in uni... at least she hasn't done any creationist statements!

Because he saw you as not too friendly? He was probably just trying to have a good time and bull shit around, and I would have joined in with his story and get him to say even more whacky stuff.

Pretty sure the issue is that it is someone stating the complete obvious, like saying oxygen is required to breathe. No shit every illegal act can be undertaken!

I do illegals daily, still on the outside of a cage. =]

    This dude was dead serious...

He wasn't no artist. I'd seen him around before. Just an old drunken bum.

I was in my local Employment office lately and was filling in some forms (for legal advice) when I overheard a guy in his mid-twenties ask "what's a C.V. ?"

I hate all of the iOS vs Android/ Mac vs PC arguments too. People get so passionate about their chosen product and start making up all sorts of bullshit. Makes no odds to me, use what you want just leave me out of it.

Yes, that and the fact that he seemed to be arguing that murder is a perfectly acceptable way of solving problems. You had to hear the whole conversation, I guess. Also, his rationale for this seemed to be that since it's physically possible, why not? I'm pretty sure he was talking about intentional homicide and not manslaughter or any kind of accidental killing.

There is more to an act than whether it is technically possible or not. You have to consider the consequences. Oh yeah, and there's also this little thing called morality, with which this guy didn't seemed to be concerned in the slightest. I think, out of all the laws humanity has ever invented, the prohibition of murder is probably the most just/logical. I don't think anyone (except maybe psychopaths) would want to live in a society where people are free to murder others any time they want.

I don't think anyone in the US knows what a CV is. I only know because a friend of mine spent some time in England (Cambridge, I think) and she mentioned it in conversation. We just call it a resume in the US.
