Hi all, I'm planning on replacing the capacitors (electrolytic) on my sega master system. I know what ratings I need on them in terms of capacitance and voltage, but was wondering what brand I should go for? Is there a significant difference in quality between different caps? If so, what brands are recommended? More specifically, I could either go to a store around the corner and buy this cheap kit from velleman: http://www.kjell.com/sortiment/el/e...olyt-120-st-p89254#ProductDetailedInformation ...or I have Elfa close by, who carry everything you need and many different brands, but slightly more expensive. I don't mind paying extra if it means prolonging the life of my sega, if indeed quality differences are an issue? Thanks for any input! ...oh, and if the seller doesn't say anything about polarity, do I assume that they are polarized?
There's no easy answer, I know I will get schooled by someone here if I say NO But seriously it depends mostly on the design of the circuit and application of the product it's used for so in your case I would say no. And I will leave you with this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrolytic_capacitor#Reliability_and_life_time Depends.. If you buy the Velleman kit make sure all the ones you need are included. Go to your local store to get only the ones you need. You will not notice a quality difference. Yes, they are or they are immune to the polarity http://www.parts-express.com/cat/non-polarized-electrolytic-capacitors/1385 Welcome.
There is a huge difference between brands and ranges. Some brands are still using compromised formulas and will not last. Some brands are just cheap and cheerful, and probably won't last. Some use high-precision manufacturing techniques and aim certain ranges at certain functions. Whilst you don't necessarily need the top capacitors (usually designed for audio circuitry or similar specific functions), it's a good idea to use 105 degree capacitors over 85 degree capacitors, as they'll last longer. And check out the rated lifespan. Personally, I stick to Panasonic or Rubycon. Illinois capacitors sound interesting if you're in the US, perhaps. And I use the major electronics distributors, as it's cheaper and they have a larger range.
ok, thanks! I ended up buying the cheaper ones. They turned out to be jamicons, 85 degrees. Anyway, I installed them and my sega is happy. Hopefully I won't have to replace them all again soon.
