    Hi.
I have my ps1 scph-5502 model chipped by some tech back in 1997 and it works just fine since then, but I've noticed an issue: black borders (up and bottom), which doensn't make me happy. Maybe wrong firmware on chip... I play NTSC-J licence only, via RGB SCART. No problem with loading discs and color, but these borders is just pissing me off! I have a tech guy who can flash proper firmware to the chip, so what would you suggest? I'd buy an scph-1000 but this 5502 was near me the for last 18 years and works perfectly, just this f...g black borders (with both pal and ntsc games), and the result is a squeezed picture.
    Thank's.

Modchips only bypass the copy/region protection. They do nothing to the picture output.

So, maybe, it's color mod issue? (I played NTSC games via composite back in the days).

Possibly. If you are using RGB, you could reverse any colour mod...

Would be easier to help with pictures of whats currently installed into the console.

Ok, I'll try to disassemble it, though I have no previous experience.

Also I have image offset problem. It's shifted for about 2 inches to the right. I think it is something with that I playing NTSC games on PAL console... Is there a PAL to NTSC convertion mod, or should I buy Japanese NTSC console to have all games work properly, 'cause some games have build-in option for screen correction, some don't, you know... and black borders mentioned before. Is there any tech guys here who can shed some light this case?
PS sorry for my bad English, I'm not a native speaker.

Are you by any chance playing on an old school 4:3 CRT TV?
The RGB SCART cable might be wired in such a way that the TV automatically switches to 16:9, and therefore adding the black bars. If this is the case, then you'll need to manually change the aspect ratio on the TV itself to correct this. I'm only suggesting this because to my knowledge the EU PS1 should be quite capable of displaying US/JAP games without borders, but to be honest PS1 is not my strong side :)

The reason why I assume CRT is because I've never personally seen any HDTV that had this picture shift you mention. In my experience those have always given me a centered full image when using RGB with such consoles.
The picture shift is normal behaviour, but it still sucks. You can get devices that can move the picture horizontally for you though. Something like an Extron RGB 190 would do the job just fine, but it will be a hassle to hook up mainly because it requires "clean sync" (google sync strike), and it would require several adapters like SCART to VGA and BNC to SCART for it to even work.
Hopefully there's a simpler solution out there, but I just wanted to point out that it can be fixed even though my suggested method sure isn't for everybody :)

HDTV (SONY and Samsung) and CRT, black boarders (up and down) on both of them, plus on HDTV picture is shifted~2 inches to the right. My original SONY RGB lead wired to force 4:3 so it isn't an issue.
Could I tune something inside my PSX to get rid of this image offset?

Too bad, I was hoping it was something as simple as that.
No there's no pot inside the PS1 that allows you to center the image. You'd have to add a mod to the AV-out. It can be done, but I'm not sure if such a mod exists yet.

It'd be better to buy an SCPH-1000 off Ebay for 70 bucks than modding and wiring my SCPH-5502...
