i'm interested in such a kind of product due to the problems i have in installing a "normal" 5.1 system.... what are you experience? is the surround effect good enough? price? are wireless sets available? what to check before buying? thanks in advance, karsten
thanks for your suggestion guys, i'm still checking. right now i've found 2-3 interesting ones, but at steep prices... or nice prices but wired. if i find a good deal i'll let you know. also if you have other so urces to search let me know!
I don't see anything for 5.1 anything here (might not be looking hard enough) but I'm considering getting one of these headphones. http://www.sennheiserusa.com/newsite/category.asp?transid=cat0 These are the ones I'm considering getting. http://www.sennheiserusa.com/newsite/productdetail.asp?transid=newHD-2
turtle beach has wireless 5.1 for cheap ( i think its 5.1 my memory is fuzzy) but they're geared for gaming
If it's a question of space & reams of wiring, then what you really want (instead of headphones) is a Yamaha virtual surround sound system called a 'Yamaha YSP-900' (or similar). It's 1 speaker, like a very large centre speaker, however it has a built in decoder, amp and series of inputs. When I first tested it I thought it was going to be rubbish, however it is actually very authentic. http://www.tech.co.uk/home-entertainment/hi-fi-and-audio/hi-fi-and-av-speakers/review/yamaha-ysp-900
You should check out the Pioneer XBOX branded set, the SE-XB1: http://www.ecoustics.com/dt/1821 The reviews are supposed to be pretty good. I always liked them because they were at a store near me and I used to often see them. They're hard to find these days, tho.
That sounds like an ideal solution for my surround sound needs. that way I won't have the missus going on about speakers all overt he place. Just a shame it cost 600 pounds :crying: Yakumo
Not these days Yakumo, you can obtain them for a lot less. There are a few prior versions as well so they'd be considerably cheaper! Look for the YSP-800, I know they go for about £250 brand new these days, so expect them second-hand for £180+
My suggestion is... don't! Especially if it is for gaming. If it is for audio, get a nice pair of Grados instead ;-)
It's a very good alternative. Having only used the 800 for a very short period of time (to establish it worked for someone) I am probably not the best person to ask how it performed. Have a hunt through reviews on 'the better' cinema review sites. I was however suitably impressed with these units, but like many felt that an external subwoofer was required. They are very efficient and space saving. Only wires trailing at the front of the room rather than right around it, or like me 2 or 3 days cutting channels in solid concrete and plaster to bury cables! Messy and rather expensive. Still, it adds about another £1,000 to the value of most homes when you provide the actual insertion points on the walls and remote volume etc.
