I've looked around and it seems majority are: take apart, set electronics and non-painted parts aside, and clean the plastic, use good paint like Krylon, let it dry, etc. There's a bit about sanding to help make the paint adhere better, particularly if the item will be handled like game controller or portable system.

I want to give my Atari Lynx II (one of it) a facelift and I don't want to lose the existing textured plastic. Is there a suggestion or is it ok to paint anyway? My concern would be paint getting rubbed off because I didn't sand it first.

I wanted to paint it something of medium to dark blue so I shouldn't need to worry about existing dark grey plastic. The finishing paint would be metallic blue flake (from hobby shop) to give it a bit of metallic shine.

I think there is a spray adhesive for paint to help it adhere to the surface.
