Ever since I saw Videotopia's website I wanted to top it becasue....that's just the kind of person I am. Their exclusion of fighting games and lightgun games and pretty much anything stylish made me belive I could out do it. My collection is small though especally compared to the collections here. Obviously if you post here nothing I could do would wow you. But for the masses Some of things I was thinking of was every model of the PS1, every Gameboy I can get my hands on (and handhelds in general) Possibly I'd show how the madden franchise evolved from the PC days to now. I hate the madden games I always thought the 2k games were better but the masses that buy it every year would probably be wowed by it. among other things I got permission to show retrocore through out the exibit and I'd probably try to get ahold of some dev kits.
This sounds intersting, but I am not sure what you want to do. But I think the thread deserve a little bump. Do you mean a virtual exhibition on a nice web page or a "real" one as Videotopia. I think the best way to start a big/deep/really dedicated collection with "wow factor" is to find a nisch you really burn for.
actually I'm not really sure what I want to do either up until now my focus was on games but now my focus is leaning toward Hardware. I want to do a real exibit that travels around science muesuems and such I would like to mostly appeal to the main stream gamer and MAYBE get them playing something good for a change rather than EA games.
Hm, maybe that could be just "your thing". Show people the "hidden/alternative" game history "they" have miss. Try to kind of exotic/obscure the stuff you show, but meanwhile try to appeal the mainstream. I think the key word here is identification. You don´t just have to show people obscure systems and games, but also show them in what way they relate to the games/hardware that actually hit in US and people know from their childhood/youth. Good idea to actually let people play the games!
Why do you want to wow the public anyway? I feel that exposing them to game candy will just mean more competition, higher prices and more people who don't RTFM. The rare/retro/import scenes are already pretty crowded and much of their appeal (and focus) from only a few years ago has disappeared as the torrents of people flood in.
Spelling Exhibit right might help. If I had a thousand yen for everytime I heard someone say 'I want to do a games exhibition' then I could buy a PS3 deluxe model and a number of games. Anyway I am sure this was an old thread too. Videotopia haven't really done much in the last 2 years there last exhibit was in Singapore. Game On is the only travelling video game exhibit that has done well and has travelled to 2 to 3 venues per year for at least 3 months a time in each. Game On does have a few advantages in the fact it's run by an Art Gallery and therefore have more good contacts within museums, art galleries and event organisers in the world and also as it's owned by the Corporation of London means it has strong backing... Most other exhibitions have either been same or have gone to the wall as they realise they aren't going to make any money out of it or at least couldn't afford to lose more. There is also the fact that you'll be surprised on how few non gamers are really interested in seeing something like a Super A'Can or a N64 Dev kit too. Anyway I'll end my rant here...
