I've designed IP for a SNES controller decoder to eventually integrate into a supergun I'm dreaming up. Knowing that many games would be awkward with a static "street fighter" layout, I've created something best described as preset button remapping. With a few flicks of a switch moving from game to game should be easy. I've thought up 6 different configurations and wonder if anyone has suggestions. What I've got so far: This covers all 1-3 button games, capcom layout games (practically all games after 1993), mortal kombat awkwardness, killer instinct snes style and both neo geo pad and "arcade" layout (if you were using a 6 button arcade setup) What am I missing?
I guess you don't play any shooters. Most of them are 2-button, making it pretty easy to deal with. What do you have against sticks?
I play shooters... 2 button games fit into the 3 button category... I have nothing against sticks, with this setup I plan to use a CPS Fighter stick in addition to pads, maybe even make my own stick. What I am against though is propriety in superguns, with a couple IC, you can turn anything into a SNES "controller". Also my SG is 4 player, I'm not going to build four bigass ugly wooden cased sticks like everyone else Lastly this SG is designed to handle any JAMMA+ game thrown at it provided an easy custom aux cable is made.
From what I can see, you have pretty much all the bases covered barring any weird rare oddity. I like the fact that your "Neo Geo for Arcade" setup takes into consideration the fact that you can press buttons 1-2 and 3-4 simultaneously for games that require it (like the King of Fighters series).
I figured that since most sticks don't have the 6 buttons exactly verticle but the bottom row offset to the left, button 4 as A, 1 as B, 2 as C and 3 as D should feel a lot like the AES controller (or a more cramped MVS) but it still retains the feel of 4 buttons in a row.
You might take into account that some people (at least, me) have trouble pressing the left trigger while doing a circle move on the d-pad.
The only SF games that get some seriously play here are those on Saturn (and I have them all, I think). However, I have recently purchased a PSX Horipad (didnt know it exists!) which is great for Street Fighter as it has 6 face buttons and a much better d-pad, so that's what I now use for Hyper SF, CvS2, CFJ and hopefully once for MVC2 if I can find the PAL release. So, sad but true, my DC copy of SF3: TS is gathering dust as I totally can't play with the DC's pad. I bought one of those customizable pads with 6 face buttons but the Y & Z button can't be configured to L/R
It's still propriety, with my SG you can use one of the several million SNES controllers (in all different shapes and forms) out there, no need for a $100 replacement stick. Also will work with crazy stuff like enhanced controllers with turbo buttons
How can it be proprietary if it uses a simple DIMM connector and they give you the pinout? I doubt you'll ever find a consortium for such a small nitche of a hardware. I think we should be happy w/ the pinout... although I'd be happier w/ a DB15 connector.
