Hi, I have modified my PAL SNES console with a region switch and 50/60Hz switch. However when I play the PAL version of Mario Kart, I experience graphical glitches every so often during gameplay. If I was to purchase the Japanese Super Famicom version of the game, would it run properly on my SNES in 60Hz mode? Or is the only way to play Mario Kart at 60Hz without errors to buy an American or Japanese machine and game?

I also read something online about the pins on the Japanese carts being different to those on PAL carts. Somebody claimed that the games wouldn't run on a PAL console even though the carts are the same shape. Can anyone confirm whether this is true please?

    Thanks a lot :)

I think by pins, he's actally talking about the plastic bits that stop a super famicom game fitting into a pal snes.

From what I understand the plastic tabs are only a feature of the American SNES, so not something for me to worry about. I was talking about the metal contacts on the cart board. "Pins" was a bad choice of word!

I have just watched a YouTube video showing someone installing the mod switches that I've installed and they tested it at the end with a Japanese version of Mario All Stars, and it booted up correctly on the PAL console. This gives me hope!

I haven't modified my snes yet but if you say you got the 50 60 hz switch, what's stopping you from running the PAL version of the game in 50hz?
I have Action Replay M3 and can play Japanese version of Mario Kart on PAL console without modification, pretty sure Mario Kart is not region protected, please correct me if I'm wrong

Well that was my initial plan - to play PAL Mario Kart in 60Hz. However after borrowing Mario Kart from a friend, it turns out that this is one game that doesn't behave correctly when you do the change. During gameplay the screen flickers now and again, and there are other graphical distortions. So I've ordered the Japanese version off eBay instead....thankfully it's a third of the price of what the PAL one sells for.

Andy it has to do with the Mode 7 Timing I'm pretty sure its frequency dependent. and in 60hz it is known to have errors because of it.

That sounds right to me. I'm hoping that since the Japanese version of the game is coded for 60Hz then it will play correctly on my PAL console if switched to 60Hz.

Yeh, the Japanese version will work fine in 60hz on a Pal system.
