I saw these at a couple of other forums and thought it might entertain you guys. Here are some Super Mario 64 beta videos over at YouTube: Nintendo Ultra 64 on Bad Influence! I actually posted two of those in videos thread but i guess no one really noticed. Nice to ahve them organized, thanks.
I do. I remember taking the piss out of all the titles having 64 in them. What ever happened to the following games that were featured on that Gamesmaster special? Kirby Bowl 64 Original Wave Racer (Looks well better than the jet ski bike version) Buggie Boogie 64 Body Harvest Creator Yakumo
Thanks for posting the vid links, very interesting. Does anyone know of a more comprehensive site than this one or that one for SM64 beta info? I hate to be the one to ask, but has there ever been a confirmed sighting of an alpha or beta copy? (probably in a private collectors hands)
I remember there was a site with many pics of beta games. Among them were Nintendo 64, Sony, and Sega titles. I just can't remember the URL. It looks like in the vid that the beta Super Mario 64 was being played off one of those N64 flash carts. I'm just scared Nintendo probably cleared the carts for other games!
Kirby bowl 64 turned into kirby's air ride on gamecube Body harvest was released on N64 Creator was incorparated into the Mario artist N64DD series
I'm taking a wild guess here, but Kirby bowl, looked like it became that kirby racing title Buggie Boogie 64, reminds me of battletanks 64, although im pretty positive its not Body Harvest, was indeed released, as im sitting starring at a copy of it. The game i believe wasnt released until well after the 64's release. Its almost like a predecessor to GTA3 Creator,...well thats news to me Cool vids mark, amazing, how,...crappy it first looked Ryan
Kirby bowl ended up not meeting nintendos expectations so they shelived the project and years later resurfaced it on cube. This excerpt from a Oct 96 Nintendo Power interview with shirgeru miyamoto on wave race 64 change to jet skis Ed.: Regarding Wave Race 64, why did you make such big changes in the watercraft? They're very different from the ones we saw at first. SM: Before Shoshinkai, we concentrated on making the water as realistic as possible on the screen, and we concentrated on the vehicles after the show. Although we used boats in the video, we decided on jet skis later. Boats looked pretty good at the show, but I didn't think that Wave Race 64 would be unique from similar games on other systems if we used boats. Jet skis can show many maneuvers that work well in the realistic water of Wave Race 64. Creator was scrapped due to the fact that the 64dd was pretty much dead. Btw the site for beta pictures and such Mark i belive is unseen 64, which also has quite a bit of early shenmue pics as well.
Well belive it or not i was at incredible universe(now fry electornics) a couple of months before 64 came out and they did have this version on display there. And it was a regular cart but with a different artwork labe. Sadly I doubt this beta will ever reach the public knowing the iron curtin of nintendo. Though from interviews ive read there were more courses in this version, but they were scrapped due to time constraints and cart size (miyamoto was even saying that there could easily be 40 course final release).
Those are some cool videos. One thing I remembered when I saw the "Zelda 64" clip was that the environment map on that soldier looked a bit familiar. Here are some interesting (I don't know if they're unused) textures I got out of Mario 64 once. I think the bottom ones are used for the environment-mapped "metal mario".
The top two are hard to place, especially the "Koopa" one. Nice finds - how did you come across them? It's also nice to hear that proto code existed in demo form for Mario 64, hopefully someone managed to quietly snag a cart and still has it around somewhere.
The N64 "Gameboy Booster" thing that I have has an N64 Action Replay built-in. As well as cheating and code search, it has memory and VRAM viewers built-in. You can view the textures of several games that way. Here's a link.
Would putting out a public reward/fund for a Super Mario 64 alpha or beta work? Has that ever been attempted before (for any game)?
I would doubt it. If I ever had a proto of Super Mario 64 or Sonic Adventure, I doubt I would sell it at all. Perhaps I would go for a community dump instead!
making a profit just for the profit isn't very nice. On the other hand many might say that the price of acquiring a rare item is high. No doubt it is, but can the original's value compare to any distribution? Hell no. Whoever got something in its original form has a piece of history, everyone else gets a taste, and that's where all the money paid for the original item goes - to the history of that item Out of the videos , I d really like to have played Buggie-Boogie, Kirby ball, MarioKart R ( That magikoopa - or kamek- looked kinda cool) and of course that version of Mario. Creator also had more than just the T-rex. It had an underwater sequence and a stupid Jiraf. Rev Limit anyone?
Kirby Bowl 64 was either scrapped or modified into what eventually became Kirby's Air Ride, the originally planned N64 title. The game looked like more of a straight forward racing game (It's been years since i've played the GC release, but I remember it having more of an adventure aspect to it *while still being on your hovercraft type thing*, but I also don't remember if that was an entirely different mode within the game all together) and as far as I know, not too much information exists about that version of the game. Other than a bunch of short videos here and there, i'm not sure what was planned for the N64 version of Kirby's Air as far as gameplay was concerned. The game just dissapeared into obscurity for years, untill it reemerged years later as a GC title, which kind of made sense considering the game was never officially cancelled. Obviously long after the N64's life cycle. And the game was shown back when the system was still being referred to as the Ultra 64. Anyways....I don't know where I''m going with this, and I apologize for bringing back an old thread. Just thought i'd throw in my two cents.
I wonder what happened to the original Wave Race code. It was going to be a power boat racing game, and then we got a jet ski one (a very cool game i might add, although too short).
