    Hi,
I searched around and thought this forum was the best to ask this question, so I registered here and this is my first post...

Today, as I was looking through my Japanese game boy games, I decided to open up two of the super mario land carts that look different.

I also opened up a Scandinavian copy of SML I have and it looked like the lower one. Therefore I think the upper one was released first in Japan. Super Mario Land was released in Japan before it was released in the US or EU.

They are both quite common, maybe someone has some information if there is a difference between the two games? I don't know how to dump games myself. I have a COM-port cable but it would take some time to look for a USB adapter (and I've read those might not even work).

Probably the same but just a different board revision and using a smaller chip.

Both seem to be labeled DMG-MLA-1 so the two carts contain both binary version 1.01 of the game.

The easiest way to tell V1.0 from V1.1 is to play the game and make mario die, if the death music has white noise snare drums playing then it is V1.1 as V1.0 only plays the music without any drum effects.

V1.0 had a number of bugs, the best one was to hold left as Mario was being pushed left on the scrolling screens.
