I have recently replaced batteries on all of my SNES carts. All of them are working great except Super Metroid. It seems that it will randomly lose it's save, this happens at the time the console is turned off and is immediate. If the save is not lost, it will persist on the cart without issue (save lasts several days when testing). Which brings me to think that the problem lies not in the connector or battery, but in the chip/mechanism that switches the sram over to battery power. I noticed that Super Metroid has given others issue as a stubborn cart and I think I know why. Super Metroid seems to be the only cart I have with electrolytic compactors. Should I replace these as well? Is there anyone here that has had similar issues? Am I on to something here or am I just shooting the moon?
Why not try redoing it with another battery and/or connector before making the assumption that there isn't anything wrong with the battery? Might be stating the obvious but are you sure you've installed it with the correct polarity?
Bad solder maybe? Check over with a good magnifying glass to make sure the battery is soldered on cleanly and also check the SRAM chip and the battery watchdog chip for any bad solder joint.
Swapped batteries and already checked the connector very closely. It is the correct polarity as the boards on the SNES games will not let you install the battery holder backwards unless you clip the legs. Everything looks intact. I will reflow what I put down, looks fine, but it is worth a shot. The reflow seems to have worked. I have created a save and checked it 5 times total and it is still there. On a side note, it is very strange how this game reacts when power is cut to the sram. It defaults to 00 energy for all saves and you die as soon as the character data for Samus is loaded.
