Do you see the connector labeled JP1? You need to connect that to the floppy, either by way of a 2-pin to 4-pin cable or 2-pin to 2-pin fitted on the rightmost floppy power pins (this will be more loose).

ok - heres what i've done. I found a 4 to 4 pin cable, but favoured the 2 white and black wires and plugged them into the most righthand pins of the floppy.

good news = when i reverse the ribbon cable the floppy drive constantly lights up and whirs. Although not working at least it shows i have provided power.

bad news = when i put the ribbon cable in normally the drive doesnt respond whatsoever within the Super Fighter Pro screens. Any ideas now? :(

You did remember to provide power via the DC jack (next to the parallel port)? Hit it with 12v and see what happens.

Don't get another slimline drive, they are expensive, fragile and typically aren't even stock on Pro Fighters. The drive should NOT be lighting up and whirring without doing a "run file" on the Pro Fighter. Are you sure you have the data cable in correctly? The Pro Fighter will work with any working PC drive so something else is the matter, there shouldn't be any incompatibility.

I'm not sure if you have the power wired correctly from the pic, looking at JP1 from the side of the unit, the left pin is GND, right is +5V. Looking at the floppy from the back, 2nd pin from the right is GND, rightmost pin is +5V. Make sure you have them right.

just to clarify the normal floppy drive only lights up and whirrs when the data cable is in the incorrect way around. when the data cable is in the correct way the drive doesnt respond at all when you hit run file.

i'm confident i have the power correct. heres another pic so you can get a better looksee (please note to the left of the white wire is a black wire that isnt very visable)

Do you have a non-twisted floppy ribbon?

if you mean a segment twists near one end within the cable (about 7 pins) - then i have a twisted cable

do i need a straight one then?

You don't need a straight ribbon, but I think that the connector nearest the twist should be the one connected to the floppy, maybe that's the problem. A shorter, single-drive ribbon would fit better too.
