First of all i don,t hope i,am breaking some rule with posting multiple treads but this is a whole other problem i have so if not allowed just let me know. I got me an second hand SWC and after opening i saw i nice big beard on the ni-cd v60r battery like in the picture. does anyone know where i can get this kind of battery i saw some on ebay but those are all NIMH instead of NICD would it be possible to fit another type in there? instead of this model? and does the damage on the PCB pose any danger to the device? i de-soldered the battery and the unit worked ok (except the floppy drive that is) and another question about the SWC as shown in this picture does this chip belong in the SWC or is it a replacement/upgrade of some sort? this is my first SWC and i would love to upgrade it with an Floppy drive usb emulator i saw on youtube just hope i can get it to work. any help is much appreciated
yeah oke so it should fit because i can,t find anything if its just for storage or if it is also charged by the SWC or not? if so could the swc charge a NIMH instead of a NICD battery?
Oke so annimh battery would work ill try and get one of those then but bad_ad i know your aan chip expert can you tell me what that chip is doing on the swc main board?
If I were you I'd replace it with another NiCD 3.6V 60 mAh. The battery is trickle charged so it should have similar characteristics. If you're paranoid about leaking it'd be better to replace the battery altogether with a capacitor. The chip you're referring to is the unit's standard SRAM, FFE used SMT SRAM + adapter board on many products.
ok thanks alot for this info do you know what type od capacitor is should use then because they are much easier to find i think?
I dunno, I'd try a 1000 uF / 16V. I'm not sure how long that'll retain the data without modifying the circuit, or if the DC jack powers the trickle charge in which case it wouldn't matter. Hopefully it's long enough to simply power off then on to save the BRAM to disk.
hmm ok so i think i,am better of trying to get a ni-cd battery back in it but would it even be possible to replace the ni-cd with an ni-mh? i mean i have an old battery charger that stats it can charge ni-cd battery,s but i does not charge ni-mh batterys because they where not invented yet when the ni-cd charger was made? or could it not hurt the device if i put in an ni-mh battery? i also got an new floppy drive an the unit works perfect even without battery but no saves for me
You can use a NiMH battery in place of the NiCD but it won't have the exact same charge/discharge characteristics. If you use one get the same voltage, 3.6 V, and don't get one too large because it will take longer to charge. I see that 80 mAh are available in the same or similar footprint so that will probably work OK. If you play the console very often or you don't expect the battery to retain the BRAM very long it doesn't really matter. Just be aware that after long periods of disuse the battery will need many hours of charging, and don't expect the battery to last forever, even NiMH will wear out.
Thanks thats good to know it wont hurt the swc ill just get a 3.6v nimh 80mah and try it i will not be using it very much but good to know it wont break the swc
