History was made March 24 2013. The prototype version of Superman 64 was released. And what do you know, the game is actually good. Much better than the final version. I've wanted to do an article on it for sometime now. After weeks of writing I have finally finished it!!!

I would like to thank a few people here:

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the NESWorld donation drive. Also big thanks to NESWorld for releasing this ROM instead.

Also thanks to SubDrag. He helped big time. He was the one who found all the cheats and dumped all the sound effects. He also gave me some patched ROMs. With the patched ROMs I was able to get screenshots of areas you can't normally get to.

If anyone finds any mistakes in the article, or has some suggestions for something I should add, please let me know.

Comprehensive! I like it, awesome job.

Bizarre and fascinating, how the comparisons to the final are all over the place....

I remember going to the game-store back when N64 was at it's highest popularity in the late 90s. On the shelf of this store there was Superman and Super Smash Bros sitting next to each other. I only had enough cash to buy one. I had no internet access at the time, and the people at the store seemed to not know much about either game. After taking some thought to it I told myself "It's superman, it's got to be a great game. I'll grab smash later."... What a terrible mistake. Easily the worst gaming purchases I've ever made and it still stings to this day. It's interesting to see now that the game had the potential to be pretty neat.

I'm going to echo what you'll probably hear from many of us on here, that was a excellent write up. Thanks for taking the time to write it and post it. It kind of makes me want to grab that old dusty game and do a compare and contrast. If you ever get the time, consider making a video on youtube about the differences. It'd be hit.

Oh man, Superman over Super Smash Bros. That's hilarious, but pretty terrible. Hopefully you did eventually get Super Smash Bros. Oddly enough Titus included a comic book and poster with Superman. Maybe it was their way of apologizing for the game and trying to give you something a little extra to make up for it.

As for videos on Youtube, I was actually thinking of just uploading a playthrough of level 7 or maybe even all 7 of the playable levels. Level 7 requires some major glitching to beat. I did my best to explain how to beat the level, but I'm sure it's still a bit hard to visualize. Especially when you tell people that you need to glitch through walls to beat the level. Definitely a great idea.

Just found this tread. I really was looking forward to this game during development and all the screenshots that would be posted in magazines. When I rented it I was disappointed and abit stunned. I think the problem with the licensor (DC comics and Warner Brothers) not understanding their own material was part of a huge problem with comic book properties in the 90s. If you look up the planned Superman Lives Tim Burton film you'll see what I mean.
