Im not sure if this is the right place to post about this, if not then feel free to delete my post a few weeks ago I bought the StarWars Episode 3 DVD, and when I put the second disc on my pc and explored it I had a "WTF!!1" moment! :icon_bigg I found 2 interesting files on the root dir, a default.xbe and a dashupdate.xbe among the usual Video_ts and flash crap. I have a standard Xbox, unmoded, and I dont really follow up with the "scene" but from what little I know I remembered that *.xbe's are Xbox executables and that a Xbox game disc has all the data recorded in some weird data track/session that doesnt even show up in a pc, plz correct me if im wrong. I went and tried this thing on my xbox and it was interesting. It went to a "please wait" screen, exactly like the ones when you update your dashboard, with a progress bar and the green-ish xbox dash theme. It took a while but after about 5 minutes it was completed, a menu appeared to choose between viewing the DVD and to load a Battlefront 2 demo. Even weirder, after I rebooted my Xbox the disc only took a few seconds to boot, I dont know if in the 1st time the disc was updating my dashboard or "installing" the game in the HD. I searched the net for info about this disc but seems no one stumbled upon it yet, this seems like the Xbox version of the Dreamcast's MIL-CD format. perhaps I should try and backup this disc to see if it boots Anyone ever found a disc similar to this one? comments? ideas?
Xbox executables can be signed by Microsoft to only boot from custom media, hard drives, dvd roms, cd roms, etc. The lockout is only if xbe is on wrong media.
This was actually relatively common, as a few movie DVDs have the demo version of their respective Xbox game onboard. What's happening is that the game demo is: 1) First updating your dash (if needed) 2) Installing to the cache partition on the hard drive XBE's can be run from any media, so long as the original XBE is flagged for it. -hl718
Star Wars Clone Wars (series 1 and 2) has Battlefront 2 and Republic Commando demos (Don't remember ontop of my head which had which demo now), but atleast on my copies of the series, one of them is missing the demo (Republic Commando demo). Even though the box and the DVD menu mentions the presence of the demo and how to start it.
This might also be a plan to screw up soft mods. "Oh let's watch Star Wars bonus features!" *puts DVD in Xbox* "Where's XBMC and UnleashX gone!? ARGH!"
