Recently, I became sort of interested in arcade boards. I'm looking at possibly getting a System 32. I found one that comes with a gameboard, and since the chips appeared to be socketed, would it be possible to take out those game chips and replace it with new chips for a game I want? Is there any security on the gameboard that would prevent me from doing so?
I'm guessing you either want to make it into a SegaSonic board or a Golden Axe 2 board. For Segasonic there is only a prototype version of the game that has no protection (missing a ton of things and characters), I have a yet to be released work around for the retail version of SegaSonic, but I don't want to promote conversions for this game,so I will only give to people who have the game. Well there's also the problem of the trackball board being just as rare as SegaSonic heh....For Golden Axe 2 the protection isn't a FD1119 security chip, but a security board (Ie it doesn't suicide but it's still similar to the security chip) and the only guy who dabbles in this said he will never release a work around for this one because all it does is promotes conversions since the chip doesn't suicide and the only reason someone would want it is to convert theirs to that game. The only games to my knowledge that don't require a security device is F1 Exhaust Note (requires analog driving sub pcb), Spiderman, Holloseum, Jurassic Park (requires analog pcb) , Rad Mobile (driving pcb), and Slip Stream (driving pcb). Although not all of the rom boards are the same, so you have that problem as well.
Yep, I wanted a SegaSonic board. I had a feeling it was going to be rare, so I thought "why not flash the game to new chips and use that?" Guess I can't do that if there is no way around the security chip. I was hoping wiring a trackball wouldn't be an issue, but if it requires its unique sub board, then I guess there isn't a way around that. I guess I won't be able to "Frankenstein" a SegaSonic arcade board then. Thanks for the information. Now this is hypothetical: If I were to find a SegaSonic game board, would I be able to use a trackball setup from another arcade machine, or does it have to be one specific for that game?
You need to find a trackball setup that has the same precision as the one used in Sonic. Generally, the Atari ones will work for you in this case. If you have a bucket of cash, PM me and I'll see about getting you an original Sonic board.
I'm building a bucket o' cash. I'll let you know if other things higher on my "want list" end up falling through and I decide to get the board. I found an Atari trackball, but it doesn't have the sub board. :/
If you want MSX, I can sell you a System 32 PCB with Golden Axe 2 if you are interested in that game.
I must have misunderstood. When you said an Atari trackball setup would work, I thought you meant the whole board, not just the trackball. It's a possibility. I'll let you know if I decide to. Right now I'm more so planning out.
