I just got done watching AVGN's review of Swordquest (atari 2600)he explains the entire competition. all the prizes the value of the prizes (150k altogether) and the clues and everything. I was wondering whatever happened to the prizes. Are they in collectors hands or lost? and if they were sold how much would they be worth now? The wikipedia entry gives accounts for each of the 4 prizes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swordquest The first one, the sword, was never given out but it is confirmed to have been created. The second, the amulet of penultimate truth, was won and the winner had it melted down (except for a tiny sword that was attached to it) in order to pay for school. The third, the chalice, is in the winner's safety deposit box. The fourth, the crown, is thought to have never been created. The last contest coincided with the crash so there was no money for them to hold it. Overall a fantastic publicity deal. It would be interesting to gather up a list of similar videogame contests to compare prizes and such.
All were created i know that as they were all shown. Airworld (the final game) was never officially released. Anyone know anything about a proto. I heard the guy who bought atari after the crash has a few of the winners items
There are 5 contest items. One for each of the 4 games and the grand prize sword. The ones not given away were kept. Many prototypes were thrown away or lost but treasures made of gold with gems were not. An ex-Atari employee a few years back confirmed that these contest prizes that were not given away are still alive and well on the mantleplace.
How do you even put a value on those? The cost to create the grand prize today has to be 100k+ I wonder what the melt down value is?
roughly 17k back then. must try to see when it was melted down then compare the worth of the usd then to the worth of the usd now.
I kinda doubt it. From what I've heard, Waterworld itself was barely finished when it was released. --Zero
I remember this game. It's the one where you literally go up down left or right about a million times and get nowhere, right?
Pretty much. If you got the game without instructions its worthless. You need to drop certain items in certain rooms to get a clue. Very dynamic actually
