It obviously looks like its main function was to do kariokea. Is it cart-based or CD based?

It's not a console, simply a home karaoke machine from 1995. Taito was in the karaoke business for a quite a while, until leaving it a few months after their absorption by SQEX.

(hmm I had to >>re-register<<, where all accounts erased at some point?)

[edit] >>Namie Amuro's launch promotion poster<< (in the form of a phonecard)

Taito are still in the karaoke business. Only last year I saw a Taito home karaoke system for sale in Best Denki, on of the biggest electronic chains in Japan.

Do many Karaoke machines come with a cross pad like that though? It looks like it was desgined for gameplay of some kind (though probably just used to navigate menus.)

It was, both songs and games were streamed from the internet, apparently taito arcade classics, but to what level i do not know.

Or at least thats what the guy in japan selling the thing says.

Maybe it's what became of the WoWoW console that was a joint venture between WoWoW the Japanese satellite TV company and Taito. If it is then it should be able to play stuff up to 16 bit quality such as Darius II and so on.

Yeah, you could download games along with songs. The song book has a section of Taito games that you can play. The service isn't available anymore I don't think. I had a Japanese person research it on the internet and she wasn't able to find anything on it. It's a closed box, no media in or out...

    I was going to say;
"omg Taito had *two* unreleased home game consoles, the WoWoW and this ??"
until I read that this X-55 is just a Karaoke machine.

    As i said...

The absorption by SQEX was in autumn 2005. Taito put an end to most of its involvment in the karaoke business in spring 2006. Please see here:

Japjac's post has been edited to remove his own self promotion.

Just so you all know, Japjac loves nothing more than to be the center of attention. He's got quite a reputation on many forums.

The "pioneer in the field of playing video games" and other quotes (!?) were amazing.
Video seems to pretty much just be a load of magazine scans, though.

I looked at the article about the WoWoW, and I was like, "That would explain so much."
EDIT: Also, I read that the X-55 was released in 1995
