this is probably a waste of a thread, but... I'm wondering how tough to find / rare Takeshi no Chousenjou for the Famicom is. I would love to pick myself up a copy as it sounds like a wicked game, and I absolutely loved the Takeshi's Castle show, and then later MXC. How much would I expect to pay for it? My usual method of finding stuff (which is very halfhearted, a quick check of my local import shop's inventory, a quick search on ebay, play-asia, and videogamedepot) has turned up nothing. I didn't even know about this games existence until I went searching for games that used the microphone on the Famicom the other day. Also note I'm not an uber collector like most of you, I've basically got two rules for buying games : The sandwhich rule for games I'm mildy interested in (if it's cheaper than the price of a sandwhich, then buy it, because all I'm out is a sandwhich if it sucks), and then otherwise I try to avoid spending more than $30 on a game, because regardless of how good the game might be, there is always a game I can find for less than $30 that is better.
The game sucks, on purpose. Seriously, I wouldn't bother trying to track it down. Takeshi himself apparently designed it, but at the time he stated clearly that he hated games. It's also impossible to finish, or so say Japanese sources. Apparently they regard it as a B-movie type game, so bad it's almost good. It actually sounds better on paper, than it does playing it: You get fired from your job and paid redundancy money (I think), and then you leave the building. You can then sit in a cinema, on the chairs backwards, watching a new art house film where NOTHING HAPPENS (I lie, I just made up the arthouse comment). You can then go play some pachinko, or sing Kareoke at a bar, though the controller doesn't really register it properly. Afterwards, why not head to one of many bars, and continue to drink alcohol until you black out and wake up at home? Where your wife starts complaining and then attacks you. Otherwise, feel free to punch the crap out of anyone you pass. Based on videos I've seen and things I've read, you're supposed to somehow make it to some island to discover a secret long lost treasure. How you do that is beyond me. Also, it's filled with weird tasks, like hitting someone an ungodly amount of times to progress, or leaving the controller untouched for an hour. Who knows? Maybe Kitano-san just made up this stuff to mess with your head. Despite all this, the Japanese for some baffling reason still voted it to number 30 in their top 100 Famicom games poll conducted by Famistsu. (My sources: Famitsu, Famicom Memorial DVD, the Famicom Memorial Book that accompanied the Tokyo museum exhibition, and of course the game)
Yeah, a lot of that is what I heard, and some of it is in the wikipedia article someone linked me : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takeshi_no_Chousenjou
LOL! Whoever wrote that Wiki entry, based it entirely on the article I wrote about the Famicom system. This line, is a direct quote just about: "The game is an experimental title attemping to break as many video game rules as possible." Thanks for pointing that out, I'm not sure whether to be honoured that someone used my work as a reference, or be worried of making errors in future features. Gimme a while, I'll dig around for the word file and post some excerts here. EDIT: Here's a section on the game from my Famicom article in Retro Gamer magazine, where I listed a few interesting FC titles: As far as I am aware, the Takeshi Castle games were not actually designed by him specifically. Also, check out: http://www.ntsc-uk.com/feature.php?featuretype=ret&fea=FamicomHistory It's an old feature I did years back, but if you scroll down, you will see the top 100 Famicom list from Famitsu, translated by me. (and yes, I am well aware that actually, the last game ever released was not the J-League title mentioned, but in fact Takahashi's Boukenjima 4)
That's an awesome link. Giving it a browse now. How come the Final Fantasy 1 + 2 combo is rated lower than Final Fantasy 1 or 2 alone?
Thanks for the compliment, as for the question... I have no idea. It was released after 1 and 2 (obviously) as a single cart, so maybe people were voting simply for their favourites that they played back in the day, rather than tactically. If I recall, you had to cast votes for either 5 or 10 (?) different titles, and then they tallied them up. I'm guessing not so many played the combo as opposed to the original single titles. A more pertinent question would be: Why is there so much crap in that list?! The RPGs and DQ games are no surprise, but they voted in lots of rubbish. Like Spelunker by Broderbund. That game flat out sucks. They also never voted for several classics, like Crisis Force for the FC. I actually find that top 100 list dull. Out of the 1000+ games released, Japan as a nation voted for those as their favourite 10%. Baffling if you ask me.... Plenty of other decent FC games though ^_^
Eh, top ___ lists always suck. And if it's one like that where people vote on it, and it happens years after the games were released, then you're gonna get a lot of crap due to misguided nostalgia.
