It's probably mean to say "haha" "母" as in mother but it's missing the top dot/dash so God knows what it is. It's possibly Chinese and not used in Japanese. I'm no Kanji expert though. I think Gaijin Punch knows the most out of all us foreigners in Japan so maybe he can shed more light on it.

Yakumo is right. Assuming Chinese, it says "Mu" which is a respectable form for saying "mother". Unfortunately, the person who wrote the character didn't do it properly. It's missing a mark on the top, but if you know Chinese you can somewhat come to the understanding that it’s a typo.

I take it the character was writen by someone who doesn't know Chinese. Bad idea. Asian writing Looks pretty, but looks and accurate writing are totally diffrent :p

Yup, don't get a Japanese / Chinese tattoo from a Westerner! Or indeed without knowing FOR SURE what it means and that it is drawn correctly!

The other way to write it without the two dashes is a line down the centre.

do japanese people get tattoo's with english words on them

i had a art teacher from china who would tell us stories about people who would use chinese characters for effect in their work... most of the time its would be nonsensical gibberish with the occasional upside down character.

Some of those ads are terrible. Theres one thats all about getting revenge on your ex, another saying "i got rich in 4 days by doing nothing" etc. I'm surprised Facebook is actually allowed to have them up there. The best one is about car insurance for teens though, with some stereotype chave hanging out of a car window with his thumb up and smiling like a berk. Priceless.
