Would these games work on a European PAL 32X? I was wondering if I could play games like Tempo and Blackthorne this way. Are they NTSC to begin with? If so, are the region locks the same as US-versions?
Hard to find much info in English. I believe most if not all major official Brazil consoles default at 60hz with US region lock. Including those the color system was adjusted to PAL-M. Of course bootlegs and region mods are likely quite popular.
But the 32x doesn't have a complete US region lock, some titles do and some don't. Even if Brazil is NTSC, they could well work. Who knows?
32x hardware is incapable of telling apart US from Japan. Or which composite color encoding the Genesis uses. 32x receives RGB video, and checks it for 50hz / 60hz. Games look at the Genesis to set language.
Just commenting: Most people see that Brazil has "PAL" as color encoding system and are quick to assume it's a 50hz country. It's 60hz and NTSC based. The government RASCALS choose to implement PAL as color scheme in an attempt of discouraging importing and smuggling of electronics goods. Any technical reasons alleged by said politicians are political bullshit. They did the same shit again when they defined the HDTV standard. They picked the Japanese format but changed the software specifications to have control over the equipment sales within the territory. Again any technical reasons alleged are plain and simple political bullshit.
Thank you both. So in short, it is not plausible for 60hz only US releases (like Tempo) would support 50hz in their Tec Toy iteration.
They're basically the SEGA Genesis release with a different manual, box and sticker on the cartridge. Edit: Save for the "locally developed" stuff like the Wonder Boy series games which got re-badged as "Monica no castelo do Dragao" or the Psycho Fox game that became "Sapo Chule" or even Astro Warrior which also became an "Sapo Chule" game. Silly stuff but hey they were "sort of" official as SEGA authorized that NONSENSE themselves. Tec Toy eventually "developed" some sense of shame and developed a game or two from scratch themselves.
dose Tech Toy butcher the sega consoles much like the blaze clones do or are the Tech Toy version even the condensed versions rather respectable?
If a US release is fine at 50hz, you still need PAL version 32x hardware to do so. But you're correct Tempo doesn't support 50hz. They would not have added that for Brazil.
Tec Toy stuff released before SEGA filled for bankruptcy (after the Dreamcast fiasco) were all official hardware made with SEGA chips. After SEGA restructured and ceased hardware production Tec Toy started to use clone chips since the source had dried up.
