As part of the course I am teaching I am trying to improve keyboard skill, pace and accuracy (something I could really do with myself). So each morning for 30mins I am using a very old Quicktype programme on a floppy disk and testing myself. I started at 45wpm and 80% accuracy last week and have increased my speed to 59 wpm and 90-92% accuracy. However, not everyone has a floppy drive on their PC and although I have asked my class to go out and purchase a USB pen drive, it ain't happenin'

I've been looking on line for a decent typing game, so other than them all buying a Dreamcast and playing "Typing of the dead" for hours on end, does anyone here know of any good, tried, tested and actually "fun" typing games for the PC?

Thus far I've found a lot online, but they all have their own glitches such as the second you make 1 mistake your accuracy drops to zero, you cannot go back to correct, or you can correct mistakes but then it gives you a 100% accuracy at the end, which is not true.

This is the best I have come up with looking this morning. Try it for yourself. BTW my typing speed increases dramatically the moment I start typing out emails etc, however the accuracy almost nose dives to 70% - never realised how bad a typist I was! Must improve!

There is a port of TOTD for the PC actually. I think its considered abandonware and can be downloaded semi legal. There is also a Lupin the 3rd typing game which I remember playing in Tokyo some time ago, however it sucked at the point where it started asking questions (in Japanese) to which you had to type the answer. :noooo:

Uh, no. Just because a game is 6 years old (I have it next to me) doesn't mean that you can just download it... :banghead:

I'd be surprised if u find anything decent online.

Mavis Beacon is the 'industry' standard.

My wife was a professional touch typist, its scary watching her type 100's of words per minute. We even got our son professionally TT trained as well when he was like 5 years old, never too young, and you never forget.

I've been typing on a computer of sorts since I was 12 years old, so 23 years later I discover that my fingers have been positioned incorrectly and in order to go through the particular course I am teaching I had best set a good example and start to learn the "correct" positions :banghead:

100's of words a minute.....

Excellent that your son is TT proficient. I can imagine when he started at school and the teacher said "And this little children, is a C O M P U T.......", "Yeah, yeah lady step aside I want to type an email to my mates in the US!"

I've been touch typing proficient for years, school had us use Mavis Beacon in the 5th grade and something that had an actual ending in the 6th. 20 lessons or so with 5 sub lessons apiece I believe, had that finished a lesson per class and then got to mess around with games while everyone else learned to type.

Just had to hit 20wpm with 85% accuracy or something. No challange for me as I've pretty much had a computer since I was 2 or 3 at least.

I learned to type with Mario Teaches Typing on my old Mac back in the day. Also, Timon and Pumba Teaches Typing.

Mario Teaches Typing was awesome, so was Typing of The Dead. I still hunt and peck though, home row is harder for me!

    Anyone remember Sonic Schoolhouse?

It took me hours (er...) to browse through the insertcredit archives to find it, so, say thank you and enjoy:

    Typingmania 4 (Flash and download)

I forgot if it is playable for people who can't read Japanese and can't test it rigth now at work but check it out. It's well made and fun.

This is a fantastic response - thanks everyone. I'm going to try and pick-up a DC version of "TOTD" just to mess around with myself, but will try a few of the links and see what the class would probably cope with initially. Don't want to challenge them too much or make it so much like fun that they can't then move onto the proper exercises after 30mins practice lol

Brilliant response! Didn't think I'd get any tbh!

that sounds like Microtype...It's a pretty good program, it kind of gets boring after a while, though.

Anyway, here's a link to their website http://microtype.swlearning.com/mt4/

You can't go wrong with Mavis Beacon - I benefited from it greatly, though I don't know how the newer versions are. If you find it too warm and fuzzy, try Microtype.

Are you sure that online test is accurate? I got 106 WPM. I knew I was fast, but damn.

Which one? The one I posted? That's the thing, I really need something that gives an accurate count. I'll look through all the links provided.

I have Mavis Beacon V9 if you want it, my son has benefited from it greatly and can now type very efficiently, and already got my daughter using a keyboard at age 3, Considering shes only 4 now and just learning to read and write (using a strange system at the school called jolly phonics) she is quite skilled on a computer, and also amazingly good at playing on her DS and the Wii

I *can* touchtype, but due to limited mobility in my fingers i tend to stick with a weird combination of using 3 fingers on each hand and my thumbs, its not ideal but works for me
