A few years ago I got a TG-16 on the cheap with no AC adapter. I have finally found one, and of coruse the damn thing is broken. Specifically, it boots, but when I load an audio CD, press play, run, whatever, and the machine does nothing. Neither the laser or spindle motor make any attempt at what would be considered movement. Any ideas on what could be wrong?
Umm, Rare and Obscure Video Gaming? Really? So it doesn't spin up at all? Could be a faulty motor, could be a faulty sensor, could be something else. You could consider this, I guess: http://www.geocities.com/turbogaming/repairs.htm
Out of curiosity, what variety of System CD card are you using? Some of the earlier TG-16 systems had problems with import System cards and adapters. Also, you don't mention if you have any problems running normal HuCard games with the CD attachment powered up, which would also be a point of information helpful for troubleshooting.
Common problem on these for the laser to die. Get a replacement part off ebay, or if you suck at fixing things sell it as parts.
HuCard games work, just have a regular 2.01 system card. Laser is probably dead I'm assuming, going to be browsing eBay.
I thought you said it wasn't spinning up at all? The unit has to spin to read a CD. You'll normally find the unit still spins up with a faulty laser - it just won't read.
Doesn't the CD unit play music when it's detached? Hook up a set of headphones and a 9v DC power adapter with the thing undocked and see if you can get it to play a music CD off the TG-16 connector. That'd be one way to isolate the dock as the failure point, rather than the CD drive.
or this lil' stinker causes the problem: it's one gearwheel which strangely is made of a different, much more porous material, than the other neighboring wheels, which seemed to be made of normal PVC related synthetics. so that specific wheel, risks to loose his teeth over many years of existing. as the result of this, it will cause an entire failure of the unit. nevertheless, i'm not aware of the exact technical specs of the US TG-16 CD-ROM, but i think that the innards are equal to the JPN one.
