Anyone else stoked for it? I've been a bit bothered lately by Nintendo endlessly reusing characters & franchises, forever making sequels, but the 3D Mario platformers are something I can still get totally excited for. I absolutely love 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy, and I hear Galaxy 2 is still amazingly good. So I'm looking forward to what they do this time (in HD no less!).

In an interview, the Galaxy director said they don't have many fresh ideas left over for a Galaxy 3, so it doesn't sound like they'll do that. And that'd certainly be fine with me - they've went with an entirely new theme every console generation, so I hope they keep up the trend.

As for the general design of the game - and I've seen this sentiment echoed in many other places on the Internet - I'd personally like to see a return to the more open 3D platforming of 64 and Sunshine. When 3D gaming first came about, lots of devs chose to use the new freedom to create huge worlds for the player to explore however they wanted. But obviously the polygonal novelty has worn off over time, and in 3D platforming nowadays it seems like there is more of a focus on tight, refined challenges. Like Galaxy - that was a more linear game. Still ridiculously good and polished as all heck, but I'd be interested to see a new exploration-based Mario. I was an N64/PS1 kid, so I remember the absolute wonder of exploring that castle in 64, jumping into the paintings, going any direction I wanted in the world.

Thoughts, predictions? Absolute hatred of 3D platforming? ;)

I think / Hope it's going to be like Mario 64 , I am very stoked for this game. Also Nintendo really needs to release a damn Paper Mario for the Wii U!!

They'd better not screw it over, but then again it's sort of hard to do that, being Nintendo and all.

I just wonder what they'll do for a new/original story...

Super Mario land 3d for 3ds was actually really good so I feel that the next one on wii u will be as well. Gotta admit though New Super Mario Bros wii U was a huge improvement over the other ones with better gameplay length and difficulty balance.

We'll just need to wait and see. Though first, Pikmin 3. :tears_of_joy:

Yeah, I was looking at some 3D Land gameplay, and... whoa, I need a 3DS.

What about... a direct sequel of sorts to 64? After all these years, Mario must once again traverse the halls of the castle. And it seems as if the art has been switched out since last time. ;)

Sadly I have yet to play a Pikmin, but boy does that one look gorgeous! Some of those first-person screenshots look super cool/surreal.

Yeah, I have pretty good faith in Nintendo. Sometimes I'm discouraged by the huge numbers of sequels, but really, it's not like there's a lack of fresh ideas outside of character choice, right? (except maybe in the case of New Super Mario Bros. 2, according to others) Somebody, Miyamoto I believe, said in an interview recently that they continue on with the old characters for the wide appeal. Makes perfect sense really - the characters will guarantee comfortable sales figures while they can have a ball coming up with new gameplay ideas.

And even though 3D land looks sweet with its traditional Mushroom Kingdom settings, yeah it'd be awesome for something original in this new one. Tropical, space, what's next? And as for story, how about a closer serious look at the Mario-Bowser-Peach dynamic? I can dream. :)

It would indeed be very good if Nintendo would return to the style of gameplay of Super Mario 64, but I highly doubt that they will ever do that. Huge, non-linear worlds with stars to find who knows where, while allowing for several different ways to obtain each star, makes for a lot of fun and high replayability. That's what Super Mario 64 delivered, and each new Mario game gives more and more guidance and linearity, which reduces the replayability in my opinion.

No. I'm pretty much sick of Mario- within the last two years, we've had seven Mario-based titles (not including Luigi's Manison 2) which has pretty much clogged up any new ideas for new games. Of course they still get critically acclaimed by the press because 'it's a mairo game. TI MUST BE GOOD!!11!'- and with another title pipelined for October 2013, because Nintendo doesn't listen or respect it's other franchises which have potential but require the almighty barricade of Nintendo- effort, I just cannot see how the public can actually accept this as a fresh, completely original new Mario game. I mean, it wouldn't take that much time or effort to slap together an always online Starfox dogfight as a free Eshop download, much like Happy Wars with micro transactions for upgrades. Heck, a Zelda-themed Happy Wars would work well- as would a FULLY FLEDGED (PLZ) STARFOX GAME FOR WII U. Please. See the light.

I can definitely understand where you are coming from when you say that all the Mario titles are being released back to back but you do need to keep in mind that Mario is the mascot for Nintendo. It's one of the first characters they developed from a simple game like Donkey Kong (not talking about difficulty) to games that have simple but elaborate stories. I do love seeing all the Mario games but it is hard to keep up with all of the new titles which is the only thing I really detest since my paycheck only goes so far and I don't have the time to play every single title. Sure, it's annoying but there are other Nintendo series getting new games added to their franchises within the Nintendo empire like the new Zelda title for the Nintendo 3DS plus Pikmin 3, and that's only just a few that have been announced at this time. I like the fact that Nintendo announces these titles amidst the massive library of Mario games because these games are in development and they always seem to know when it is the best time to announce new titles to existing franchises.
