I remember some Amiga enthusiasts talking about an Amiga portable back in the day (early 90s) with the specs of the original 1000. So, did it exist? or was just another fanboy's obsession? I already did a search and found nothing, but tought somebody here may know more about this.
the closest to it was the cd32 console which was basically a 1200 internals minus the keyboard, floppy and a intergrated cd drive, and there were some homemade mods with a small lcd panel attached made for that, other than that, nothing official was ever made by commodore.
Well one of the Amiga creators stuck an Amiga into a SX-64 case and therefore it's a sort of official unofficial machine. Other companies have tried to build Amiga portables during the life of the Amiga. Here is a good site for various information. http://www.amigau.com/aig/portamiga.html Oh and Shadowlayer your avatar is quite offensive. You should probably change it back to what it was.
Nah, this rumor is from before the CD32, so I think that if it was real it had anything to do with that. EDIT: theres the Quikpak, but that was in 97 and I'm talking about 92 or even before (my memory is kinda blurry). Seriously, I dont think that this is offensive at all, being less "hard" than my old signature with the penis/console joke (which paulo told me to remove yet Yakumo said it was cool).
I don't know whether this is perhaps what you were thinking of SL, it was an add-on rather than a portable Amiga in handheld form (if you know what I mean). A bit like the LCD added onto the PSone. An Amiga laptop! http://www.old-computers.com/museum/computer.asp?st=1&c=108 Interestingly the article mentions that the project was cancelled after a Commodore exec became convinced by a Tandy exec that LCD portables had no future. He he he !!!
That link is for a portable commodore than has nothing to do with the amiga, or the C64/128 for that matter... Anyways, from the site: Apparently the Commodore executive who was responsible for this product (Marshall Smith) was convinced during a conversation with a Tandy (Radio Shack) executive that there was no future in LCD notebook computers. Tandy, of course, went on to sell huge numbers of the model 100,102 and 200 LCD notebook computers! Jesus christ! what kind of morom takes advice from the enemy?
Tandy wasn't really an Enemy of Commodore  http://www.amigau.com/aig/portamiga.html There was never an official portable Amiga, other than a few R&D tinkerings to test the concept.
Is just a way to say he shouldnt listen to another company's exec... Anyway, maybe one of those Amiga's was the one from the rumor, since they're all from about that time.
  The people has spoken, I shall keep my new avatar Anyway, I'm not sure if one can slay a shadow:lol: BTW, should I keep my current signature? or change it back to the one with the penis/console joke? you decide.
I'm pretty sure there was talk of a luggable draco, but I haven't found anything while googling. http://www.amigahistory.co.uk/draco.html http://www.amigahistory.co.uk/casablanca.html I also remember a flight case based amiga that was built by index, but again no information. http://www.amigahistory.co.uk/access.html There was also a guy that turned up to all the amiga shows in the uk with his own portable a600. smf
ok not an official release, but there are several functioning homebrew amiga laptops around, mostly based on A1200 boards, but i saw an A500 based one, too. I go to computer demo-scene parties regularly, and theres at least one of those on each of them. I ll take some pix next time i run into one. tubo
Man it was so long ago that I cant remember if they were talking of an official laptop or just a 3rd partie clone... Who knows, information was very sketchy before the internet.
It was definitely a fanboys obsession. There are a couple of homemade Amiga laptops based on the A600. Never seen a A1200 homemade laptop. There was a company called Pawns who made a shell to convert your A600 or A1200 to a laptop but I think it used an external PSU and no battery. It was expensive as hell and super rare. I have only seen one owner of a Pawns Amiga on the net. With todays technology you could make a cool homemade Amiga laptop, screens are cheaper, batteries easier to get and you can run flash disk as HD. I am waiting for that really good and portable homemade Amiga laptop running of batteries, maybe with the MiniMIG we will se some?
