I under stand where these different consoles were released. Currently I am looking at buying another Neo Geo. I sold mine about 10 years back. I am still up in the air for which one I am getting. I may get a MVS cab this go round. My question is about the lock outs on the different versions. Can PAL play NTSC or NTSC-J? Or would I need to get a different BIOS for it? Or if there is a good site out there with this kind of information, that would be cool too. I can find one. Thanks Brandon
There is no region lock out for cartridges, you will however get a difference in the games depending on what console you play them on. Only the Japanese console has a BIOS chip which lets the games display full blood and boob bouncing, PAL and US systems censor it. Also a PAL system will be 50hz, so will play the games about 20% slower. The Japanese consoles are the most easily available anyway, but you'll not have English text with any games that don't allow you to choose a language (most don't have the option), you can get around this with an upgraded BIOS chip though.
If you have room for MVS cab, take one with unibios. If you don´t have room for MVS cab, get a consolized MVS with unibios. No reason to go for AES really, unless you really want to buy expensive collector´s games that are worth thousands of dollars.
The MVS is a better choice for cheaper games, I have an AES and an MVS and I always go for the mvs cart the aes rip your wallet.
I've only got an AES currently, but I can see the appeal of the AES. I'll only be buying the odd game but I do enjoy the machine.
