Amazon cancelled my potassium iodide order from sunday since theyre redirecting everything to Japan. Japan's reactors are leaking Cesium gas though I believe, which as far as I am aware potassium iodide provides 0 protection against?

Potassium Iodide is only there to protect your thyroid from being filled w/ radioactive iodine and becoming cancerous or becoming non-functional.. it doesn't protect you really from radiation exposure in general.

Geiger counters are sold out in serveral places in Germany. That's it, I declare the majority of people living in this country officially nuts.

    See below:

    Exactly.

    We knew that already ;)

It's stupid though. If anyone takes an aeroplane anywhere, they'll be exposed to far more than having a house next to a damn reactor.

    People are so stupid sometimes.

I hope everyone from this forum is alright.
it's been a disaster and it could get really bad with nuclear rain.

    We're all with you JAPAN!

It's not just Germany that is going ape-shit over something that really won't affect them, but the EU Energy chief says Japan is out of control.

Whoever is buying iodine pills and lives in the EU is an impressionable sheep. If anyone it should be paranoid Americans who should buy them since that is where the leeward winds will blow the radiation to if it gets to high levels. Europe is very impressionable these days... and I thought America would go ape-shit as Fox news is trying to push it but I don't see mass panic like in Germany.

I trust the Japanese will be able to contain it, if not, then oh well.

I've always wanted a geiger counter, wonder if I could get one written off now under earthquake insurance.

Built just like it should. All hell breaks loose but we still have a connection to Japan. I can't begin to imagine the panic if the internet had been severed completely and cell phones went down.

    Bwahahaha, good one Ape :)
Anyway, found a little something that got out through that boring-as-hell Wikileaks-us-embassy stuff:
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wik...CEMBER-NUCLEAR-SAFETY-AND-SECURITY-GROUP.html

Paragraph 6 seems to be interesting...

About the radiation from living next to reactors: Funny thing is that some long-term studies have found a significantly higher cancer rate in villages next to some nuclear plants here in Germany. There's a reason why people are scared, the "temporary underground storages" for nuclear waste over here, which were a few years ago deemed unfit for storing radiactive materials (the reason being that parts of the surrounding materials react with the heat from the waste and could form acidic materials, resulting in a breach of the containers used for storing the waste) have silently been re-named as permanent storing grounds (Endlagerstätten).

And that's what people are most upset about, corporations and politicians not being honest when it comes to health risks. There were a lot of incidents in nuclear plants over here that only saw the light of day when unannounced checks of the facilities were done by the government - this led to the shutdown of one power plant which has now been offline for years and will not go online anymore since it's license has expired and it will not get a new one in its current state (design is from 69).
The local government even put the list of flaws they found online to expose the energy company (Vattenfall), the official report stated 707 flaws!

How they accumulated such a number unnoticed is beyond me... even some materials used in the building of that thing were not deemed fit for nuclear installations.

That, combined with the health scare, has led to a certain Paranoia among Germans. Down here in the more southern regions we fear the french, Cattenom to be exact. Google that one up, not a pleasant place to work at.

Comment #2= I meant they can't be trusted in this particular subject. France has in the past performed nuclear testing and have several nuclear plants in their home country. Yet I haven't heard of them sending a team to Japan to actually assess the situation (if they sent someone, I didn't hear from it).

All I was trying to say is that it sounds like they are raising alarm when everyone is trying to keep things calm.

They asked the Americans because the have alot of experiance with boiling water reactors, having some themselves. when it comes to evacuations the French and Russians are getting out the Japan, and the UK goverment have told their people to consider getting out of Tokyo.

As for sending nuclear specialists, wath are you talking about ? In such situation, it's the IAEA that sends people, not a specific country..

Not true, the Japanese requested help from America, probably why the IAEA have their knickers in a knot about not being told enough.

Well, I'm sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings.

Clearly there was a lack of information on my part, so I shouln't have said anything

Regarding the send for help and supplies. Uruguay is sending ONLY a bunch of rescue dogs and some cans of CORNED BEEF.

That's fucking lame. They should be sending at least 4 UPA's (http://www.upa.com.uy/modules/inicio/index.php) to help out with the water shortage.
UPAs are one of the only things Uruguay does right... And they're not sending any.

The government is also sending money to Uruguaian citizens living in Japan, pretty much to help them escape the country.
