"You're forgetting the NASA Planetary Projection system. I think that's the alternative explanation that dysfunction was talking about." "NASA is projecting planets in space.........?" "Obviously. How else would you see them?" " Q: "What about the stars, sun and moon and other planets? Are they flat too? What are they made of?" A: The sun and moon, each 32 miles in diameter, circle Earth at a height of 3000 miles at its equator, located midway between the North Pole and the ice wall. Each functions similar to a "spotlight," with the sun radiating "hot light," the moon "cold light." As they are spotlights, they only give light out over a certain are which explains why some parts of the Earth are dark when others are light. Their apparent rising and setting are caused by optical illusions."
I think that it's pretty obvious from reading the FAQ and a few choice posts, that this site is a practical joke (i.e. not constructed to be taken seriously). A few naive people may have bought into it and are helping to perpuetuate it's stupidity. But for the most part, it seems to revolve around a few asses who get a rise out of arguing with people for fun. Perhaps there is supposed to be a logical reason for why they are doing this, ala the church of the flying spahgetti monster, but it's kind of unclear to me what that logic would be.
That sounds plausible too. But with weird things being harbored by the internet you cant tell whether to take what you see seriously or not.
Actualy the site is not a joke. This is a serious society thats been around for a very very very long time. Most of it's members are dying out tho (due to old age).
According to Wikipedia the site is legit, it's what remains of a movement that once numbered 3500 people.
edit: retracted. The website is half joke/half antithesis. Little or no correlation between this site and the original religious cults that perputuated FET.
Every year I read F451. And there is written, that if more and more people are born there are more and more point of views on every thing in and out of this world, and that there are more and more minorities who must be protected. We believe in what we are able to believe in.
Thats an explanation for ignorance, not an excuse. I'm not sure this would help. I don't think its possible (at least cheaply) to circumvent the globe longitudinaly. I wouldn't mind going half way though and dropping them off.
yea, lets drop em off near the Ice Wall and have them arrested for resisting conspiracy, by a slade-riding body-builder dressed like Santa Clause. You see? That's where the Santa myth started. When people started getting arrested by the Ice Wall Polce.
Well this is not to surprising to me,the fact is they have no actual proof, just irrelevant theories.Ignorance is bliss in so many ways.
The Flat Earth Society has been around for a while, but I always thought that their message was really tongue-in-cheek. I had thought they didn't really believe the Earth was flat; it was just a metaphor for not blindly believing everything you're told. Are they clever this way, or are they truly ignorant?
I take wikipedia with a grain of salt, and urge everyone else too as well. http://www.theflatearthsociety.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7425 As edited in my post above:The website is half joke/half antithesis. Little or no correlation between this site and the original religious cults that perputuated FET. Reading into some of the post will cause you to realize this, especially when several of the mods concede that it is a joke.
Reading through some of the posts there I can see that a few of the people are clearly taking the devil's advocate route (a couple of the site admins there look like they're doing it just to keep the site alive.) There are a couple of other posters though that have that kind of disdainful arrogance that comes with a religious fanatic; Someone who blindly follows beleifs that go against all logic and who draw strength from those who try to convince them otherwise. Back in the 20th century I used to make fun of people like this on the internet, militant vegans, Christian fundamentalists, Gun nuts, active and retired military personell, White supremicists, Scum manifesto butch lesbian activists, and others of thier ilk, i.e. fanatics. When the internet was young and everyone actually read everything you posted on a BB or chat room it was fun (this was before the general online community grew so jaded, you can't really invoke controlled flamewars like this anymore as most site admins shut that shit down too quickly nowadays. Plus nobody gives a shit anymore.) But I've come to an understanding that such behavior is not only demeaning to myself, it actually strengthens those who you wish to destroy. You will never "get through" to a person with self imposed blinders on. What you end up doing is arguing stuff to make yourself look superior, which I just don't have a need for anymore. The only way to defeat fanatics is to ignore them and booster your "correct" opinion somewhere else in the hope that your side attracts more adherents than thiers, and that one day they will die out. Besides, it's no fun if no one gets the joke except you.
